Hanson, Jones lead Braves over Padres

Apr 28, 2011 - 1:22 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Tommy Hanson sparkled in seven scoreless innings and Chipper Jones had three RBI to pass Mickey Mantle on a unique list, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 7-0 victory over San Diego in the rubber match of their three-game series.

Hanson (3-3) struck out 10 batters, giving up four hits and one walk while lowering his ERA to 2.57 this season.

"It felt good. It was just one of those days where everything was working," said Hanson.

Jones had an RBI ground out and a two-run triple, moving past Mantle for second place all-time among switch hitters with 1,512 career RBI.

San Diego starter Mat Latos (0-4) allowed six runs, but only one of them was earned. He yielded seven hits and a walk, striking out five as the Padres lost for the sixth time in seven games.

"He couldn't string together enough good pitches to keep the ball out of the middle of the plate," said Padres manager Bud Black of his starter's inconsistent outing.

Jorge Cantu, Brad Hawpe, Orlando Hudson and Will Venable had singles for San Diego's four hits.

Hawpe and Venable singled off Hanson in the seventh inning, moving Hawpe to third base -- the only time the Padres had a runner past second all game.

Hanson threw 74 of his 113 pitches for strikes and faced the minimum in four of his seven innings. Cory Gearrin and Craig Kimbrel finished off Atlanta's fourth shutout of the season with back-to-back scoreless innings of relief.

Jones belted a two-run homer from the left side in Tuesday's 8-2 Atlanta victory to tie Mantle on the list. Batting left again, he slapped a slow grounder to short in the first inning Wednesday, scoring Martin Prado from third for his 1,510th RBI to pass the late Yankees great.

The Braves blew the game open with a five-run second inning, keyed by Jones' triple over the glove of Cameron Maybin and off the wall in center field. The rally was punctuated by Brian McCann's RBI double to make it 6-0.

Jayson Heyward hit an RBI single in the ninth inning off Evan Scribner, scoring Nate McLouth for the final run.

Game Notes

Jones remains well behind Eddie Murray's 1,917 RBI among switch hitters...Prado, Heyward, McCann and McLouth had two hits apiece for the Braves.
