Mariners complete sweep of Tigers

Apr 28, 2011 - 11:11 PM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Luis Rodriguez belted a three-run homer and Michael Pineda made club history, as the Seattle Mariners completed a three- game sweep with a 7-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Ichiro Suzuki and Justin Smoak both doubled in a run for the Mariners, who have notched three straight wins for the first time this season.

Seattle has won seven of 11 overall.

Pineda (4-1) gave up a two-run double to Alex Avila among four hits over six innings. The right-hander also walked three and recorded nine strikeouts en route to setting a Mariners rookie record for wins in April.

"Great job of controlling the ballgame. Mixed his pitches well," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said of his starting pitcher.

Brad Penny (1-3) surrendered four runs and nine hits in seven full frames for Detroit, which was outscored 24-6 in this series.

"We just didn't play good enough," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland.

Pineda struck out the first four batters he faced before Brennan Boesch doubled. Ryan Raburn then drew a walk and Avila followed with double to right field for a 2-0 Detroit lead.

Seattle got the two runs back in the top of the third. Three straight hits -- the last one off the bat of Suzuki -- opened the inning and produced a run. A fielder's choice by Chone Figgins plated Jack Wilson.

Smoak followed a leadoff single by Miguel Olivo in the fourth with an RBI double to put the Mariners up 3-2. Olivo made it 4-2 with a solo home run in the sixth.

Rodriguez provided insurance two innings later with his first home run since July 24, 2009. Detroit reliever Ryan Perry walked Milton Bradley, who stole second and took third on a groundout. After Perry intentionally walked Adam Kennedy to put men on the corners with two away, Rodriguez launched a 2-2 offering over the right-field wall.

Game Notes

Seattle recorded its first three-game sweep in Detroit since May 16-18, 2003...Pineda passed Freddy Garcia (1999) for the most April victories by a Mariners rookie...Smoak extended his hitting streak to 10 games...Boesch, who collected two of Detroit's five hits, has now reached base safely in 16 consecutive games.
