Correia, Pirates shut down Rockies
Apr 30, 2011 - 5:54 AMVideo
Correia (4-2) allowed three hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings while Jose Veras, Chris Resop and Joe Hanrahan worked the rest of the game with Hanrahan picking up his eighth save of the season.
"He pitched a great game for us tonight," said Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle about Correia. "He continues to change speeds and has great command of his fastball. Very, very good outing."
Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones both hit solo home runs while Ronny Cedeno added an RBI triple for the Pirates, who dropped two of three to San Francisco in their previous series.
Jhoulys Chacin (3-2) gave up all three runs on six hits over seven innings for the Rockies, who had won three of their previous four.
"We definitely have firepower on our team and will get out of this hitting slump," said Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. "We are 16-8 so not everything is going wrong for us."
McCutchen homered with one out in the third to give the Pirates the lead.
Chris Iannetta hit a one-out single in the third to give Colorado its first baserunner of the game and moved to second on Chacin's sac bunt, but Dexter Fowler looked at strike three to end the frame.
Correia allowed just one baserunner in the fourth and fifth innings combined and Jones made it a 2-0 game with a two-out, solo shot to right in the sixth.
In the seventh, Pedro Alvarez hit a two-out single and scored on Cedeno's triple to left for a 3-0 lead.
After Seth Smith singled with two outs in the seventh, Correia stepped aside for Veras, who got Jose Lopez to strike out.
Resop worked around a one-out single in the eighth, while Hanrahan set down three straight batters in the ninth after giving up a leadoff single to close out the win.
