Fister hopes for some run support in Boston

Apr 30, 2011 - 2:38 PM (Sports Network) - Aside from one game this season, the Mariners have given Doug Fister next to no run support. They'll try to ramp up their offense tonight as the M's continue a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Aside from his fourth start of the season, the Mariners given Fister just three runs of support in 2011. He's coming off a no-decision against Oakland last Sunday, when he allowed four hits and a run over six frames. The right- hander is 0-2 with a 4.34 ERA in three lifetime starts against the Red Sox.

After starting the season with a 15.58 ERA, John Lackey has given up just one run through 14 innings, covering his last two starts. The right-hander gets the call tonight for the Sox following a terrific outing his last time out. Lackey pitched eight scoreless innings and earned the win against his former team - the Angels - on Sunday.

Lackey has a 13-9 record with a 3.64 ERA in 27 all-time starts against the Mariners. He pitched twice against Seattle in 2010, going 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA.

On Friday in the opener of this set, Jack Cust doubled home Chone Figgins with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, lifting the Mariners to a 5-4 win. Justin Smoak delivered a two-run single for Seattle, which has won a season- high four in a row.

Smoak has an 11-game hitting streak.

The Mariners, who swept a series in Detroit by a combined 24-6 count, got spectacular bullpen work Friday night.

Jason Vargas (1-2) started and allowed eight hits and four runs over seven frames. Jamey Wright then retired the side in order in the eighth and Brandon League did the same in the ninth to record his sixth save of the year.

Mike Cameron hit a pair of solo homers for the Red Sox, losers in three of four since a five-game winning streak.

To make matters worse for the Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka left the game in the fifth inning with tightness in his right elbow.

Boston started an 11-game homestand Friday and is 5-5 as the host.

The Red Sox had won three straight over the Mariners prior to Friday.
