Giants, Nats continue set in D.C.
Apr 30, 2011 - 2:47 PM (Sports Network) - Lefty John Lannan makes big-league start No. 101 and aims for a first career defeat of the San Francisco Giants when the Washington Nationals host the defending World Series champions in the second test of a four-game set at Nationals Park.Lannan pitched well en route to a no-decision in his lone meeting with the Giants, tossing seven innings of eight-hit, one-run ball.
He's pitched five innings of more in each of his five starts in 2011, though he was beaten, 4-2, at Pittsburgh after allowing five hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings on April 25.
He'd won two of his initial three decisions prior to that game, downing Atlanta, 6-3, with five innings of one-run ball, then beating the Cardinals, 8-6, at St. Louis with five innings of two-run ball.
In 26 2/3 overall innings, he's given up 30 hits and 13 runs.
The Nationals are 3-2 in games Lannan has started.
Another lefty, 28-year-old Jonathan Sanchez, also tries for his third victory in his sixth start of the season for San Francisco. He's given up three earned runs or less in each outing, allowing an overall 10 earned runs in 28 overall innings.
He gave up two hits and two runs in five innings of a start against Atlanta on April 24 - getting a no-decision in a game the Giants lost, 9-6. The Giants are 3-2 in games he's pitched.
Sanchez is 1-1 with a hold in six games - three starts - against the Nationals.
On Friday, Jason Marquis tossed his fourth career shutout and singled in a run in Washington's 3-0 victory over Tim Lincecum and the Giants.
Marquis (3-0) allowed five hits and fanned seven without walking a batter for the 99th win of his career. It was his seventh complete game.
It's been a wonderful start to the season for the 32-year-old right-hander, who had an injury-marred 2010 campaign that saw him go 2-9 with a 6.60 ERA. His ERA stands at 2.62 after five starts this season.
Laynce Nix belted a two-run homer in the second inning, as the Nationals won their second straight following a 1-6 stretch. Ian Desmond went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored.
Lincecum (2-3) yielded seven hits and fanned seven without walking a batter over his seven innings.
The Giants won four of six against the Nationals a season ago.
