Halladay goes distance, Phils beat Mets to set franchise mark

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Roy Halladay tossed his 60th career complete game and the Philadelphia Phillies set a franchise record with a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets in the middle tilt of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

Halladay (4-1) limited the Mets to one run on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

"I was trying to be aggressive, trying to throw strikes and got some early swings for some quick outs. That helped," said Halladay. "I felt like I was able to keep things down, keep things under control and we got a lot of outs early, a lot of outs within the first three pitches."

At 18-8, the Phillies set a club record for wins in the month of April, surpassing the 1993 squad that won the National League pennant.

Jon Niese (1-4) was tagged for two runs and six hits over 6 1/3 innings for New York, which has lost three straight games after winning a season-high six in a row.

Things won't get much easier for the Mets, who will face No. 2 Phillies starter Cliff Lee on Sunday.

"We gotta keep playing, we gotta keep playing along," said New York manager Terry Collins. "We gotta come out and fight tomorrow."

John Mayberry Jr. tied the game with a leadoff home run to left field off Niese in the seventh. Wilson Valdez followed with a single and Dane Sardinha walked before Halladay struck out on a bunt attempt.

Taylor Buchholz replaced Niese and Shane Victorino singled to load the bases for Placido Polanco, who lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead.

Halladay gave up a one-out single to Jose Reyes in the eighth, but got Daniel Murphy to ground into an inning-ending double play.

New York's David Wright walked on four pitches to open the ninth. Halladay, though, retired the next three batters to seal his seventh win in as many starts against the Mets.

Three straight singles by Murphy, Wright and Carlos Beltran produced the Mets' lone run in the fourth.

"It was definitely a pitchers' duel," said Mayberry. "Both guys had really good stuff going. We just had to battle."

Game Notes

Halladay has now won 12 consecutive starts against NL East opponents...Polanco finished 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games...The Phillies improved to 10-0 in day games this season.
