Fister helps Mariners blank Red Sox
May 1, 2011 - 6:44 AMVideo
Fister (2-3) held Boston off the scoreboard over 5 2/3 innings despite allowing five hits and five walks, and Laffey bridged the gap to Brandon League, who closed out Seattle's fifth straight win in the ninth.
Milton Bradley and Jack Wilson each knocked in a run for Seattle, which will go for the three-game sweep on Sunday with ace Felix Hernandez on the hill.
John Lackey (2-3) scattered seven hits and four walks while allowing two runs over six innings for the Red Sox, who went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position to fall for the fourth time in five games.
The Red Sox wasted a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the first inning, stranded a runner on second in both the third and fourth frames and failed to score after putting their first three hitters on in the fifth.
In the latter frame, Adrian Gonzalez lined out into a double play before Justin Smoak had enough room near the dugout to grab Kevin Youkilis' foul out to leave runners on the corners.
"We had a few opportunities and didn't do anything," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.
The Mariners also had numerous chances to score, and the two runs they pushed across proved to be enough.
Ichiro Suzuki worked a one-out walk in the third, advanced to third on a Chone Figgins single and scored when Bradley slapped a double down the left-field line.
"We're playing good," Figgins said. "There's always room for improvement."
Seattle extended its lead via more small ball in the sixth, as Just Cust led off with a single and was moved around by a base hit and a sacrifice bunt prior to Wilson's sacrifice fly.
Laffey relieved Fister in the sixth with two outs and runners on first and third. Again the Red Sox came away empty when Miguel Olivo made a running grab behind the plate on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's pop up.
Laffey stayed in for the seventh and continued Boston's frustrations by getting David Ortiz to fly out in front of the warning track in left, leaving runners on second and third.
Boston got a leadoff single from Saltalamacchia in the ninth, but League induced a double-play ball off the bat of Jacoby Ellsbury and finished off his seventh save by getting Dustin Pedroia to fly out to right.
