O's go for sweep of White Sox in Windy City

May 2, 2011 - 2:45 PM (Sports Network) - Jeremy Guthrie tries to pitch the Baltimore Orioles to a four-game sweep of the struggling Chicago White Sox this evening when the two teams conclude their set at U.S. Cellular Field.

Guthrie, though, is winless in his last four starts and is only 1-3, despite allowing more than two runs just once this season. He was terrific on Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox, scattering seven hits over six scoreless innings, but did not get a decision in his team's 5-4 win.

"The game's not always fair, but Jeremy was outstanding," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

Guthrie has faced the White Sox 10 times (eight starts) and is 3-4 with a 4.36 ERA against them.

Chicago will counter with lefty Mark Buehrle, who like his team, is trying to find his way. Buehrle lost his third straight start on Wednesday against the New York Yankees, as he gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings to fall to 1-3 on the year to go along with a 5.12 ERA.

Buehrle is 5-5 lifetime against the Orioles with a 2.97 ERA in 16 games, 14 of which have been starts.

Chicago had manager Ozzie Guillen back on the bench on Sunday following his two-game suspension for comments he made on Twitter, but it did not matter, as Nick Markakis had a three-run double to back six strong innings from Zach Britton in Baltimore's 6-4 win.

Luke Scott had a solo homer and knocked in two runs, while Mark Reynolds also clubbed a solo shot for Baltimore, which has won five of six.

Britton (5-1) allowed one run on five hits, walked three and struck out one. Kevin Gregg worked a scoreless ninth inning to lock down the win and record his fifth save of the season.

Adam Dunn hit a pinch-hit two-run homer and Brent Lillibridge added a solo blast for the White Sox, who dropped five in a row.

Gavin Floyd (3-2) was roughed up for seven hits and six runs in six innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out five, and fell to 3-2 in six career games against the White Sox.

"He threw a lot of cutters, sliders and curve balls so you can almost go up there and sit on an off-speed pitch," said Markakis. "The more pitches you can eliminate, the easier it is to hit."

Baltimore, which took four of its seven matchups with the White Sox last season, has not completed a four-game sweep in Chicago since turning the trick from July 6-9, 1995.
