Gorzelanny helps Nats blank Giants

May 3, 2011 - 4:55 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mike Morse and Jerry Hairston Jr. both knocked in a run to help back eight shutout innings from Tom Gorzelanny, as the Nationals edged San Francisco, 2-0, in the finale of a four-game set.

Wilson Ramos went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Nationals, who won three games in the series.

Gorzelanny (1-2) was sensational, allowing only three hits with four strikeouts. The left-hander threw 95 pitches -- 62 for strikes -- and did not issue a walk.

"He was outstanding and we had good defense behind him," said Washington manager Jim Riggleman. "A real clean game."

Drew Storen worked a scoreless ninth to record his sixth save of the season.

Aaron Rowand had two hits for San Francisco, which has dropped eight of its last 11.

Madison Bumgarner (0-5) was the hard-luck loser, yielding two unearned runs on four hits with one walk in seven innings. He ended with seven strikeouts.

"It's a shame we couldn't get him a win tonight," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He threw great. But there's not much you can do if you don't hit."

Bumgarner retired the first 12 batters before Ramos led off the fifth with a double off the left-field wall and advanced to third on a bunt by Ian Desmond. Bumgarner then fanned the next two batters.

Ramos reached on a two-out fielding error by third baseman Miguel Tejada in the seventh and went to third on a base hit by Desmond. Morse then grounded a run-scoring single up the middle and Hairston plated another with a double to right-center to make it a 2-0 game.

Brian Bixler was walked intentionally and Gorzelanny grounded out to end the inning.

Back on the hill, Gorzelanny retired 15 straight, before Cody Ross broke the string with a single to center with two outs in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Eli Whiteside then struck out.

Storen entered for the top of the ninth and retired the first two batters, then walked Buster Posey, but got Pat Burrell to ground out to end the game.
