Tigers face tough task with Yanks' Sabathia on the mound

The Tigers' woes continued in Monday's opener, as Nick Swisher delivered the go-ahead RBI single in a two-run ninth inning, lifting New York to a 5-3 victory.
Mark Teixeira scored his second run of the game on Swisher's single up the middle off Jose Valverde (2-1), and Alex Rodriguez came home on a passed ball two batters later for the final score, giving the Yanks their third straight win.
Bartolo Colon, trying for his third straight win, threw together another good start for the Yankees, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out seven in seven innings.
"Very good again," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Colon, who is starting games for the first time since 2009. "You take three guys out of [their] lineup and he was great."
Joba Chamberlain (2-0) pitched around a single in the eighth to earn the win, and Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth for his league-leading 11th save.
Alex Avila homered twice for the Tigers, who have now lost seven in a row and haven't dropped eight straight since Sept. 16-23, 2005.
"I love my team," Leyland said. "I still love my team. I don't care what's happened. That's just how I feel about it. I think this is a real good team, and I know that this team, at some point, is going to really play good. I believe that with all my heart. If I felt [otherwise], I'd tell you, but this is a good team."
It doesn't figure to get much easier for Leyland's crew tonight, as they face left-hander CC Sabathia, who has won his last two starts. Sabathia beat the Chicago White Sox his last time out, surrendering three unearned runs in seven innings to run his record to 2-1, while lowering his earned run average to 2.25.
Sabathia did not get a decision on Opening Day against the Tigers and is 15-11 lifetime against them with a 4.52 ERA in 31 starts.
Detroit, meanwhile, will counter with Brad Penny, who was annihilated by the Yankees in his first start of the year back on April 2. Penny gave up eight runs in 4 1/3 frames of that one and is 1-2 in four starts against them with an 8.84 ERA.
Penny failed to follow up his first win of the season on Thursday against Seattle, as he was charged with the loss, yielding four runs and nine hits in seven innings. He is 1-3 on the year with a 6.11 ERA.
The Yankees took two of three from the Tigers earlier this year in the Bronx.
