Red Sox shoot for another win over Angels at Fenway Park

May 3, 2011 - 2:47 PM (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox try to continue their recent mastery of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this evening when they resume a four-game series at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox have won all five of their meetings with the Angels this season after going 9-1 against them last season. They have also won 16 of the past 18 games in the series, including seven of eight and eight of the last 11 in Beantown.

It was more of the same for Boston in Monday's opener, as it hung the first loss of the season on Jered Weaver. David Ortiz hit a two-run homer to cap a six-run seventh inning, helping the Red Sox to the 9-5 win.

Weaver (6-1) was bidding to become the first pitcher since 1891 to win seven games by May 2. But the Sox led 3-2 after six, and when he was taken out in favor of Hisanori Takahashi, it all fell apart for the Halos.

"He can throw you any pitch in any situation, that's why he's doing so good," said Ortiz of Weaver.

Adrian Gonzalez drove in three runs, while Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia knocked in two runs each for the Red Sox, who had dropped two of three to Seattle over the weekend.

Clay Buchholz (2-3) worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and two runs for the win.

Vernon Wells hit a two-run shot and Bobby Abreu drove in a pair of runs for the Angels, who have lost two of three.

The Angels will rely on right-hander Dan Haren this evening, as he tries to improve upon his American League-leading 1.23 ERA. Haren's only loss in five decisions, though, came at the hands of the Red Sox on April 22 when he allowed four runs (two earned) in six innings. He pitched seven innings against the Oakland Athletics his last time out, but did not get a decision, despite allowing just an unearned run.

Haren has not had much success against the Red Sox over the course of his career, posting a 2-6 mark to go along with a 3.19 ERA in nine starts.

Boston, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Jon Lester, who beat Haren in that outing two starts ago and is 3-1 lifetime against the Angels with a 4.81 ERA.

Lester tossed six scoreless innings to beat the Angels, then followed that up by defeating Baltimore for his third straight win, as he allowed two runs and four hits in eight innings to improve to 3-1 to go along with a 2.52 ERA.
