Mariners top struggling White Sox in final at-bat
May 7, 2011 - 5:54 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Brendan Ryan singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the surging Seattle Mariners edged the Chicago White Sox, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game series at Safeco Field.Jack Cust and Jack Wilson stroked back-to-back one-out singles in the ninth off Chicago reliever Matt Thornton (0-3). After pinch-runner Adam Kennedy advanced to third base on a flyout, Ryan grounded a 1-0 offering to center field to send the Mariners to their eighth win in 10 games.
"He's been swinging the bat better the last three or four days," said Seattle manager Eric Wedge about Ryan. "He's had some hard outs and I really like the way he's been approaching the baseball at home plate, but a big hit like that's the type of hit that can get you going."
Felix Hernandez (4-2) went the distance for Seattle, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Philip Humber limited the Mariners to two runs and three hits in a seven- inning start for the White Sox. The right-hander also walked three and fanned four.
Chicago has now lost eight of their last nine games and 18 of 22 overall.
"(We) just couldn't, unfortunately, get a win for Phil, who deserved it," said White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Paul Konerko plated Juan Pierre with a sacrifice fly.
Seattle moved ahead in the sixth on RBI doubles by Milton Bradley and Justin Smoak.
Carlos Quentin's leadoff home run to left field drew Chicago even in its next at-bat.
