Marlins resume series with Nationals
May 7, 2011 - 2:43 PM (Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins send right-hander Chris Volstad to the mound tonight in an effort to head off a full-scale slump as they face the Washington Nationals in the middle game of a three-game series at Sun Life Stadium. The Marlins were 19-10 and in a dead-heat for first place in the National League's East Division, but have since fallen two games off the pace of the Philadelphia Phillies with two straight losses, including a 3-2 decision to the Nationals in Friday's opener.
Adam LaRoche's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning was the decisive blow for Washington, which was coming in after being swept by Philadelphia.
In the 10th, with Michael Dunn (2-2) on the mound for Florida, Jayson Werth drew a one-out walk and moved to third on Laynce Nix's double. LaRoche followed with a sac fly to score Werth for a 3-2 advantage.
Drew Storen (2-1), who threw a scoreless ninth, stayed on in the bottom of the 10th and gave up consecutive singles to start the frame that put runners at the corners.
After getting Omar Infante to groundout back to the mound and striking out Wes Helms, Storen stepped off the mound for Sean Burnett, who got Chris Coghlan to line out for his fourth save of the season.
Jerry Hairston was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI while Ian Desmond drove in the other run for the Nationals. Jordan Zimmermann went six innings in the start and gave up two runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
Volstad, who won a career-best 12 games last season, got a no-decision against the Nationals after five innings of four-hit work in Miami on April 6.
He's won two of three decisions in four starts since, though he's been touched for five earned runs in three of those outings and carries a bloated 6.00 earned run average into tonight's game.
He's 5-1 lifetime against the Nationals in 10 starts, allowing 39 runs in 60 hits in 52 1/3 innings.
Volstad is 2-0 at home in 2011.
For Washington, lefty Tom Gorzelanny comes off his best outing of 2011.
The 28-year-old Illinois native went eight scoreless innings and allowed just three hits with four strikeouts and no walks in a 2-0 blanking of defending World Series champion San Francisco on May 2.
He's given up two earned runs or less in four straight outings, lowering his ERA from a season-high 8.44 to just 2.93 after 30 2/3 innings.
Gorzelanny is 1-0 in two starts against Florida, allowing just two runs on 10 hits in 13 innings.
Florida took two of three matchups versus Washington from April 5-7 this season and has won 12 of 15 against the Nationals.
