Rockies try to make it two in a row over Mets

May 10, 2011 - 2:40 PM (Sports Network) - A return home helped the Rockies snap their longest losing streak of the season. If starter Jason Hammel can keep putting up zeros, they have a good shot a starting a winning streak.

Colorado looks to remain unbeaten against the New York Mets this evening as the two clubs continue a three-game series at Coors Field.

The Rockies carried a four-game slide into last night's opener and had lost 12 of 19 since starting the season 11-2. Though they failed to score more than three runs for a fifth straight game, Chris Iannetta's solo homer in the seventh inning was enough to lift Colorado to a 2-1 win.

Iannetta had two hits and also scored on Dexter Fowler's RBI single in the fifth inning for the Rockies, who have won all five of their games versus the Mets this season.

"It's good because that's what you wanna do when you're out there," said Iannetta. "But over the course of the season you're going to have a bunch of different guys who carry the team."

Jhoulys Chacin did not get a decision despite giving up just one unearned run on two hits over six innings, while Huston Street worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 12th save.

New York's lone run in the game came in the fifth inning when Carlos Beltran scored on Ian Stewart's throwing error on a ball hit by Jason Bay. New York went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 in its second straight loss since a three-game winning streak.

Chris Capuano allowed two runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.

"I'm just disappointed because I felt like I gave that one away," said Capuano. "I was just making too many mental mistakes out there."

Hammel carries an 14 scoreless-inning streak into this start as he has not allowed a run since giving up a game-opening homer to Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen on April 30. He didn't allow another run for the rest of his seven- inning outing and then pitched another seven scoreless frames in a no-decision versus Arizona on Thursday.

The 28-year-old right-hander is 2-0 with a 0.87 earned run average over his past three starts and 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA in six total starts this season.

Hammel faced the Mets on April 11 and got a no-decision, giving up four runs -- two earned -- over six innings. He is 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA against them lifetime.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey opposed Hammel on that day and also got a no- decision, getting charged with four runs -- three earned -- in 5 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old is 5-2 with a 2.91 ERA in eight career starts against the Rockies.

The Mets hope that Pelfrey has put his slow start behind him as he makes his eighth start of the season this evening.

A 15-game winner last year and New York's default ace with Johan Santana still out due to injury, Pelfrey went 0-2 with a 9.72 ERA over his first four starts, but is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA over his last three. The right-hander is coming off a win over the Giants on Thursday in which he gave up two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and two walks over a season-high 7 2/3 innings.

"I think this was a great start for Mike and I hope it gets him on track," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

New York has lost five of its past seven at Coors Field.
