Arrieta tries to be O's stopper in opener with Mariners

The Orioles, who opened the season with a flourish under manager Buck Showalter, have dropped four straight to fall a season-high five games under .500 at 14-19. Thanks to the slide, Baltimore now trails the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays by 5 1/2 games in the always competitive American League East Division.
Baltimore was swept in a three-game set by the Rays over the weekend at Camden Yards, culminating with a 5-3 setback on Sunday. Brad Bergesen (0-4) went 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks to take the loss.
Arrieta, who turned 25 in March, has won three straight decisions since opening this, his second big-league season, with a win and a loss in his initial two starts.
The product of Texas Christian University allowed just three hits and a single run in his most recent outing, a 3-2 win at Kansas City on May 4 in which he walked two batters and struck out eight.
Arriets, who has never faced the Mariners, allowed three earned runs or less in six of seven starts and pitched at least six innings in five.
Seattle, meanwhile, counters with rookie righty Michael Pineda, who tries to get back on the track that saw him win four straight starts between April 12 and 28.
The 22-year-old dropped a 3-2 verdict at Texas in his big-league debut on April 5, then downed Toronto, Kansas City, Oakland and Detroit in success, while allowing 17 hits and five runs in 25 1/3 innings.
The streak was stopped by the Rangers on May 4, when he was touched for seven hits and four runs in a 5-2 loss in Seattle.
Pineda, who's struck out 39 batters in his first 38 1/3 innings, has allowed an opposition batting average of just .210.
On Sunday in Seattle, Alexei Ramirez drove in the first run of a three-run 10th inning as the Chicago White Sox downed the Mariners, 5-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set.
Brendan Ryan had two hits and an RBI for the Mariners, who finished 3-3 on a six-game homestand.
Brandon League (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Seattle won six of its nine matchups with the O's last season.
