Arizona continues series in San Francisco

May 11, 2011 - 2:35 PM (Sports Network) - Cody Ross was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants late last season and became an instant success with timely hits and a hard-nosed approach to the game.

Ross batted .294 with five homers, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored during the run to a World Series championship and was in postseason form last night against the Arizona Diamondbacks with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth.

Ross and the Giants will get back to work this evening against the NL West foes in the middle test of a three-game series.

Giants ace Tim Lincecum struck out nine and walked two over eight shutout innings in the no-decision and closer Brain Wilson notched his third win in four outings by hurling a scoreless ninth inning. Wilson improved to 3-1 on the season after Ross singled home Darren Ford, who pinch ran for Buster Posey, with one out in the home half of the ninth.

"Our pitchers keep us in the game, and we have confidence in each other that someone's going to come through [offensively]," Ross said.

Aubrey Huff had the only extra-base hit with a double for San Francisco, which has won four in a row and six of seven games.

Jonathan Sanchez will try to keep the Giants rolling when he gets the start tonight and is 2-2 with a 3.55 earned run average in seven starts. Sanchez is 0-1 in his previous three outings and lost to the Mets in last Thursday's 5-2 setback in Flushing, NY, as he allowed a season-high five runs in five innings. He has pitched just five innings in each of his last three starts.

Sanchez looks to move his career record against Arizona over the .500 mark tonight and sports a 6-6 ledger to go along with a 4.58 ERA in 18 games (15 starts). The lefty has won four of his last five matchups with the D'Backs.

So far Arizona's nine-game road trip has been a tough one with two straight defeats and losses in three of four games. The club wasted an excellent start by Ian Kennedy, who delivered eight scoreless innings and fanned eight. David Hernandez was saddled with the loss for giving up Ross' RBI single.

"It's tough to lose these type of games," Kennedy said.

Kennedy had one of Arizona's five hits, while both Melvin Mora and Justin Upton both went 1-for-4 in defeat.

Armando Galarraga will handle pitching duties for the Diamondbacks Wednesday and he's 0-2 with a 4.40 earned run average in his last three starts. The righty did not record a decision in Friday's 4-3 loss at San Diego, as he allowed three runs -- two earned -- in 4 1/3 innings.

Galarraga, who had won his first three starts, will face San Francisco for only the second time in his career. In a 7-2 win on June 18, 2008 by the Bay, Galarraga, then a member of the Detroit Tigers, yielded just two unearned runs in six innings.

The Giants won two of three games against Arizona from April 15-17 this season at Chase Field and have won nine of the last 11 meetings between the clubs.
