Padres knock around Brewers to avoid sweep

May 11, 2011 - 9:56 PM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Jason Bartlett capped an eight-run eighth with his second RBI single of the inning, as the San Diego Padres pounded the Milwaukee Brewers, 13-6, to avoid a three-game sweep at Miller Park.

Cameron Maybin joined Bartlett with four hits and two RBI for the Padres, who banged out 23 hits, one shy of the club record. Ryan Ludwick belted a two-run homer and added a run-scoring single in the lopsided win.

The Padres entered the eighth down a run after the Brewers had erased a 5-0 deficit.

Three consecutive singles by Brad Hawpe, Chris Denorfia and Bartlett to start the frame produced the tying run. After Will Venable advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Milwaukee reliever Kameron Loe (2-4) intentionally walked Chase Headley to load the bases for Maybin, who plated a pair with a double down the left-field line. Headley scored on Mark Kotsay's throwing error for a 9-6 San Diego lead.

"He's got a really good sinker and he got it up in the zone and I was able to handle it," Maybin said about Loe.

Mike McClendon replaced Loe and Ludwick deposited his first pitch over the wall in right-center. San Diego's lead grew to seven on RBI singles by Hawpe and Bartlett.

Padres starter Tim Stauffer gave up a season-high six runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. Chad Qualls (2-2) tossed 1 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win.

San Diego jumped on Milwaukee starter Randy Wolf for three runs in the first inning.

Denorfia crushed the left-hander's second pitch of the game for his first career leadoff home run. Bartlett followed with a single, swiped second and scored on a base hit by Jorge Cantu. Ludwick drove home Headley later in the frame.

The Padres extended their lead to 5-0 in the third on an RBI double by Rob Johnson, who then scored on an Alberto Gonzalez single.

"[Wolf's] stuff is fine, his fastball is fine and his velocity is there," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "Every time he made a mistake, they hit it, whether it was a changeup or a breaking ball. They didn't miss anything."

Milwaukee got two runs back in the fourth, as Casey McGehee singled home Ryan Braun and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Yuniesky Betancourt.

The Brewers pulled even in the next inning after Stauffer retired the first two batters. Kotsay walked and advanced on a wild pitch before Braun grounded an RBI single to left. Prince Fielder followed with his 200th career home run, a blast to right-center.

Betancourt clubbed a solo home run to put Milwaukee up 6-5 in the sixth.
