Votto's RBI single in 10th lifts Reds over Cards

Scott Rolen came off the disabled list and had three hits and an RBI for the Reds, who posted their seventh win in nine games. Edgar Renteria knocked in two runs for Cincinnati.
Matt Holliday had three hits and two RBI for the Cardinals, who blew a four- run lead and couldn't hold onto a one-run edge in the ninth.
Kyle Lohse, making the 300th appearance of his career, allowed seven hits and a pair of runs over six innings for the Cardinals. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo also lasted six frames, giving up six hits and four runs, three of which were earned.
The Cardinals blew a four-run lead and the Reds finally tied the game in the ninth against Eduardo Sanchez. Edgar Renteria walked and went to second on Sanchez's fifth straight ball of the inning, a wild pitch way inside. Votto grounded out before Brandon Phillips dropped in a single to short center to even the contest, but the Reds squandered a chance to win the game later in the inning. With two down, Rolen singled to left-center, putting men at the corners. Pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes continued his season-long struggle at the plate by striking out.
Francisco Cordero (3-1) escaped a jam with two men on base in the top of the 10th, and the Reds got a lead-off double from Ramon Hernandez to start the bottom of the frame. Heisey then hit a bouncer to first base, and Hernandez was caught in a rundown before finally being tagged out at third. Heisey went to second, and then Drew Stubbs flied out.
After Jason Motte (1-1) walked Renteria, Votto, the NL's reigning MVP, grounded a single to right field. Heisey scored easily as the throw home was late.
"He's always a tough guy to face because he throws so hard and he elevates the ball," Votto said. "He's a guy a lot of guys strike out on, but I got two strikes against me and I felt I really had to fight."
Af first, Votto fouled off a 1-2 pitch and then took ball two before getting his winning hit. Before that, Motte made some good pitches to Renteria, but ended up walking him on a 3-2 pitch.
"I said earlier 3-2 I felt like it was a good pitch, but the umpire didn't, that's the way it is, he (Mike DiMuro) called a ball," Motte said.
Holliday and Daniel Descalso doubled in runs to highlight St. Louis' three-run fourth inning.
After the Reds wasted a bases-loaded chance in the fifth, the Cardinals widened the gap to 4-0 the next inning on Descalso's RBI single.
A run-scoring single from Jay Bruce followed by Rolen's one-hop RBI double off the wall in right made it 4-2, but Holliday singled in Colby Rasmus in the seventh.
Renteria's double plated two runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Reds squandered another bases-loaded chance later in the inning.
