Cueto goes for Reds against Cards
May 14, 2011 - 2:31 PMVideo
Cueto, who started the year on the disabled list due to irritation in his right biceps/triceps, was reinstated on Sunday at Wrigley Field and threw six- plus scoreless innings in Cincinnati's 2-0 victory. He's 3-3 with a bulging 6.44 ERA in nine lifetime starts against the Cardinals.
The early returns on McClellan going from the bullpen to the rotation have been positive thus far. After seeing action out of the 'pen 68 times last season, the righty has pitched exceptionally in 2011. He and Jaime Garcia are already the first pair of Cardinal starters to both begin a season 5-0 since 1963 when Curt Simmons and Ray Washburn accomplished the feat.
Now, McClellan looks for a 6-0 start by facing the Reds for a second time this season, but the first time in a starting role. His only relief effort came on April 22 in St. Louis following a rain delay. McClellan threw six innings for the win, allowing jut two runs.
McClellan has made 20 career relief appearances against the Reds, going 1-0 with a 2.96 ERA. While those stats aren't really telling, this one is ... the Cardinals are 17-3 in games McClellan pitches against Cincinnati.
Helping McClellan has been the offensive support. He leads the NL in run support, averaging 7.21 runs per game. The team hasn't lost in any of his seven appearances this season.
If there was any thought of a struggle in McClellan's game it didn't show in his last start, on Sunday against Milwaukee. In that game, he allowed four hits and a run in a career-best eight innings.
The Reds got the best of the Cardinals on Friday, rallying for a 6-5 win in 10 innings. Joey Votto singled in Chris Heisey with the winning run.
Scott Rolen came off the disabled list and had three hits and an RBI for the Reds, who posted their seventh win in nine games. Edgar Renteria knocked in two runs for Cincinnati.
Matt Holliday had three hits and two RBI for the Cardinals, who blew a four- run lead and couldn't hold onto a one-run edge in the ninth.
Francisco Cordero (3-1) escaped a jam with two men on base in the top of the 10th, and the Reds got a lead-off double from Ramon Hernandez to start the bottom of the frame. Heisey then hit a bouncer to first base, and Hernandez was caught in a rundown before finally being tagged out at third. Heisey went to second, and then Drew Stubbs flied out.
After Jason Motte (1-1) walked Renteria, Votto, the NL's reigning MVP, grounded a single to right field. Heisey scored easily as the throw home was late.
"He's always a tough guy to face because he throws so hard and he elevates the ball," Votto said. "He's a guy a lot of guys strike out on, but I got two strikes against me and I felt I really had to fight."
Kyle Lohse, making the 300th appearance of his career, allowed seven hits and a pair of runs over six innings for the Cardinals. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo also lasted six frames, giving up six hits and four runs, three of which were earned.
The season series is even after four games.
