Amid turmoil, Yanks try to salvage finale with Red Sox
May 15, 2011 - 2:44 PM (Sports Network) - Jorge Posada was the biggest story in baseball on Saturday and he didn't even play. It remains to be seen if Posada will be in the lineup this evening when the New York Yankees try to salvage the finale of their three-game series with the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The struggling Posada arrived at Yankee Stadium on Saturday to find out that he would be hitting ninth. He appeared to be fine with the move when talking to reporters before the game, but a short while after that he asked manager Joe Girardi to take him out of the lineup.
"Jorgie came into my office before the game and said he needed the day off," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said afterward. "That was the extent of our conversation."
Posada, who is hitting a mere .165, revealed after the game that a stiff back was the cause of him asking out. However, general manager Brian Cashman contradicted that earlier in the evening when he said that Posada's absence was not injury related.
"I don't know why he made a statement during the game, in the middle of the game," Posada said of Cashman. "I don't understand that. That's the way he works now."
Either way, Posada likely wouldn't have made a difference on Saturday, as Josh Beckett tossed six scoreless innings and Adrian Gonzalez belted a three-run home run, propelling the Red Sox to a 6-0 win.
Jacoby Ellsbury had a two-run double and Dustin Pedroia collected three hits for the Red Sox, who moved to one game under .500 (19-20). Boston has been within a game of the break-even mark three times this season, only to fall in the next contest.
Beckett (3-1) got the best of an anticipated duel with Yankees ace CC Sabathia, striking out nine batters while giving up just four hits and walking two in the impressive outing. With the standout performance, Beckett extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 18 1/3 innings.
Sabathia (3-3), meanwhile, allowed six runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings for New York, which has dropped a season-high four consecutive games and has lost eight of its last 11.
As if things weren't bad enough in the Bronx, tonight they face left-hander Jon Lester, who is 4-1 with a 2.96 ERA. On Tuesday in Toronto, Lester was fortunate not to get a loss, as he permitted five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Although he received a no-decision, Lester pushed his unbeaten streak to five starts.
Lester is 6-1 lifetime against the Yankees with a 3.28 ERA and has yet to face New York this season.
Posada is just 4-for-21 lifetime against Lester.
While Yankee fans are hesitant to say it aloud, Freddy Garcia has pitched extremely well thus far. In six appearances, Garcia has compiled a 2-2 record with a 2.61 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 31 innings. The veteran righty beat Kansas City on Tuesday, allowing just one earned run in six innings.
Garcia pitched one inning of relief against Boston earlier this season and is 8-2 lifetime versus the Red Sox with a 4.44 ERA.
Boston has won four its five matchups with the Yankees this season.
