Harang leads Padres into test with Brewers
May 19, 2011 - 2:43 PMVideo
Harang was born in San Diego and attended San Diego State before being drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1999. However, the bulk of his 10-year career was spent with the Cincinnati Reds before he signed with the Padres as a free agent this past offseason.
The chemistry was instant with Harang and his hometown club as he went 4-0 with a 1.88 earned run average over his first four starts without giving up a homer. However, the 33-year-old righty has hit a rough patch, going 1-2 with an 8.46 ERA in four starts since.
The inability to keep the ball in the yard has hurt, with Harang dealing up seven home-run balls over his last four outings. He gave up two in a no- decision to the Rockies on Saturday, also pitching a season-low 4 1/3 innings while yielding seven runs.
Harang is now 5-2 with a 5.05 ERA on the season and 5-5 with a 4.65 ERA in 21 career games versus the Brewers, all but one of those starts.
Harang and the Padres hope to avoid losing three in a row for the first time since April 26-29 this evening after dropping last night's opener, 5-2. Ryan Ludwick had a two-run homer to account for San Diego's offense, while Dustin Moseley lost his third straight after giving up three runs -- two earned -- over 5 1/3 innings.
"Any time you lose ball games, there's a concern. We want to win," said Ludwick. "Obviously tonight, it didn't happen. But we didn't play a bad game."
Perhaps the return of speedy center fielder Cameron Maybin can help the Padres. Maybin was hitting .480 (12-for-25) over six games before sitting out the last two with a right knee injury. He could return to action tonight.
Mark Kotsay led Milwaukee's offensive charge on Wednesday with three hits and two RBI, while Prince Fielder had a pair of hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Corey Hart also chipped in three hits as the Brewers won for the fifth time in six games.
Yovani Gallardo won his third straight start as he went six innings and gave up two runs with nine strikeouts.
"I was aggressive. I threw a lot of fastballs," said Gallardo.
Taking the hill for the Brewers tonight is Chris Narveson, who snapped a three-start slide his last time out. He did so by holding the Pirates to a run on five hits and four walks over six frames, striking out five in an 8-2 victory while avoiding the big inning that had plagued him over his skid.
"The other games he cruised along for a while, then he's had a bad inning to set things back," said Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke. "Three of these losses have been because of one inning. I think he's really pitched well, and I don't think his record shows how well he's done."
The 29-year-old southpaw is 2-3 with a 4.00 ERA in eight starts this year and has faced the Padres just once before, giving up three runs over just three innings of a no-decision.
Milwaukee won two of three meetings with San Diego from May 9-11 at Miller Park and is 5-2 in the past seven matchups between the two teams.
