Giants try to extend home winning streak over Athletics

May 20, 2011 - 4:30 PM (Sports Network) - The Bay Bridge series gets underway tonight, when the San Francisco Giants take on the Oakland Athletics in the first of three straight games from AT&T Park.

The Giants have won six in a row at home against Oakland and have won 10 of the past 14 meetings in this series. The Athletics hold a 42-38 advantage in the all-time series with San Francisco, but are only 15-18 at AT&T Park.

Oakland, which swept the Giants in four games to win the 1989 World Series, is 136-112 against the National League, while San Francisco is barely above the .500 in interleague action, going 113-111.

San Francisco will also host Florida for three games on this six-game homestand and is coming off a two-game sweep of the NL West-rival Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. In Thursday's 3-1 win in the series finale, Madison Bumgarner finally recorded his first win of the season (1-6) by holding LA to only a run on six hits in 8 2/3 innings.

"He felt like he got in a pattern," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of the left-hander. "He got away from using both sides of the plate."

Brian Wilson got the final out of the game for his 13th save, while Freddy Sanchez drove in two runs and Mike Fontenot finished with an RBI for the Giants, who have won nine of their last 12 games.

Ryan Vogelsong draws the start tonight for the defending World Series champions and is 3-0 with a 2.36 ERA in six games, four of which have been starts. He threw 6 1/3 shutout innings in a 3-0 win over Colorado on May 8, then held the Chicago Cubs scoreless through six innings in Saturday's 3-0 victory.

Vogelsong, a right-hander, is back in the majors for the first time since 2006 and faced Oakland once on June 12, 2004 in a 12-11 loss. He did not record a decision that day and surrendered six runs in four innings of work.

The Athletics went 3-4 on a seven-game homestand and were swept in back-to- back games by the Minnesota Twins. They were hammered by an 11-1 score last night, as Hideki Matsui scored the team's only run in the seventh inning when Mark Ellis grounded into a fielder's choice.

Tyson Ross got the start for the A's last night but had to leave after just seven pitches because of a left oblique strain. He suffered the loss for allowing a run, falling to 3-3 on the season.

"I'm disappointed I let the team down today," Ross said.

Trystan Magnuson allowed six runs and five hits over two relief innings for Oakland, which will also visit the LA Angels of Anaheim for four games on its upcoming road swing. Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp, who missed Wednesday's game due to a family matter, was back in the lineup on Thursday, going 1-for-4 at the plate.

Trevor Cahill can become the majors' first seven-game winner when he toes the rubber for Oakland Friday night. Cahill, one of four pitchers with six wins on the season, is coming off his first loss after he surrendered four runs -- two earned -- and a season-high 10 hits in seven innings of a 4-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Cahill is now 6-1 in nine starts and raised his earned run average to 1.82. The right-hander is 3-0 in four road assignments this season and 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA in two career starts against the Giants.
