Giants continue series against visiting Athletics

May 21, 2011 - 2:43 PM (Sports Network) - The Giants look to continue their success at home when San Francisco host the Oakland Athletics in the second installment of the Bay Bridge Series at AT&T Park.

Brett Anderson will look to get back on track this evening when he takes the ball for the Athletics against the Giants. Through his first five games of the season Anderson surrendered six earned runs and allowed only four walks. However, in his last four outings, the southpaw has been a shadow of himself by serving up 16 runs, while walking 12 batters.

The young hurler was a bit erratic in his last outing, allowing four walks against Anaheim, but for the most part Anderson pitched well enough to help the team grab a victory even though he was not part of the decision.

In the 5-4 win over the Angels, Anderson walked four batters and allowed five hits in 6 2/3 innings, but he was effectively wild, racking up seven strikeouts in the matchup as well.

Anderson has made one career start against San Francisco and it was a forgettable one, as the 23-year-old was shelled for six runs on eight hits in just four innings of work.

Also looking to bounce back will be San Fran's ace, Tim Lincecum. The former Cy Young winner was surprisingly wild in his last outing, walking six batters in a loss to Colorado. He also allowed two home runs after surrendering just two total in his previous eight outings.

It was the third loss in the last five starts for Lincecum, who will try to corral his fourth victory of the season and his first at AT&T Park this season.

Since 2008 Lincecum has racked up 27 wins at home, but this year in three starts at AT&T Park the hard-throwing right-hander is 0-1 with a 3.66 earned run average. Lincecum has allowed as many earned runs (eight) in those three starts as he has in his six road contests.

Unlike his counterpart, Lincecum has enjoyed plenty of success in the Bay Bridge Series, winning four of his five starts, while posting an outstanding 1.45 earned run average. Lincecum, who has gone the distance twice in those five outings, has surrendered just six runs in 37 1/3 innings against Oakland and has recorded 41 strikeouts in the process.

Last night, Aubrey Huff laced a run-scoring single in the 10th inning to lift San Fran over the Athletics, 2-1.

Oakland reliever Brian Fuentes (1-5) served Huff a four-seam baseball that Huff ripped into the right-center gap that brought home speedy Emmanuel Burriss from second to give the Giants their third straight win.

Mark Ellis recorded his 1,000 career hit with a single in the second inning for Oakland, which has dropped three straight.

Both teams had just five hits in a game that was mostly a pitcher's duel.

Oakland starter Trevor Cahill was brilliant through six frames, allowing just one hit, one earned run and fanned six batters, though he failed to become the majors' first seven-game winner.

Meanwhile, Ryan Vogelsong was just as strong for the Giants, surrendering one unearned run with four hits and five strikeouts over six frames.

Both teams then went deep into the bullpen the rest of the way as Javier Lopez (2-0) threw a perfect 10th inning to set up the win.

The Giants have won seven straight at home against Oakland and have won 11 of the past 15 meetings in this series. The Athletics hold a 42-39 advantage in the all-time series with San Francisco, but are only 15-19 at AT&T Park.
