Marcum, Brewers down Rockies

May 22, 2011 - 3:05 AM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Jonathan Lucroy hit a solo homer and Shaun Marcum pitched eight innings of one-run baseball, as the Milwaukee Brewers took down the Colorado Rockies, 3-2, in the middle installment of a three-game series.

Prince Fielder drove in a run and scored a run for the Brewers, who recorded a 7-6, 14-inning victory in the opener of this series on Friday.

Marcum (6-1) gave up just four hits en route to winning his sixth straight decision. He also struck out eight and walked two. John Axford picked up his 11th save despite giving up a run in the ninth.

"He's a special pitcher," Lucroy said of Marcum. "A lot of guys are going to guess because of the way he can change location."

Carlos Gonzalez hit a solo home run for the Rockies, who have lost three of four. Seth Smith had an RBI.

Clayton Mortensen (1-1) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on five hits over 6 2/3 frames in the loss. He also struck out five and walked three.

Gonzalez put the Rockies on the board in the first with a two-out homer to right.

The Brewers responded with two runs in the home first to take the lead. Rickie Weeks led off with a double and crossed the plate three batters later on Fielder's double to left. Casey McGehee then reached base on third baseman Jose Lopez's fielding error, which allowed Fielder to score for a 2-1 margin.

Colorado stranded runners on second and third in the third.

Lucroy led off the fifth with a homer to left to give Milwaukee a 3-1 lead.

Marcum retired the final 10 batters he faced, but Axford had some trouble closing the game out in the ninth. Troy Tulowitzki hit a one-out triple to right and scored on Smith's groundout to make it 3-2. Pinch-hitter Jason Giambi followed with a single to keep the Rockies alive, but Ty Wigginton went down swinging to end the game.

"I thought Marcum did a great job of working around his fastball," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "We weren't able to do much with him after the home run in the first inning."
