A's try to avoid seventh straight loss in Anaheim
May 24, 2011 - 2:36 PM (Sports Network) - Hoping to avoid a seventh straight loss, the Oakland Athletics turn tonight to Guillermo Moscoso, who makes his first major league start this evening in the second of four straight games versus the hosting Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.Moscoso is expected to be recalled today from Triple-A Sacramento to replace the injured Tyson Ross in the rotation. Ross is out with a left oblique strain suffered early in his last start on Thursday.
The right-handed Moscoso is 3-2 with a 4.02 earned run average in eight games, including seven starts, with Sacramento this season. Though the 27-year-old Venezuelan hurler has never started a game in the majors, he did make 11 relief appearances with the Rangers from 2009-10. One of those came against the Angels, who he held scoreless over 2 1/3 innings.
"He's been pretty consistent," Oakland manager Bob Geren told his team's website. "He's throwing strikes, and he's ready to go. He has a good breaking ball, and when he throws it at the right speed, it's pretty good. He throws a changeup any time and has pretty good command of his fastball. He's off to a decent start."
Moscoso will be the next starter to join Oakland's rotation in as many days due to injury after Josh Outman made his first start since June 19, 2009 due to Tommy John surgery in last night's opener. Replacing the injured Brandon McCarthy, Outman gave up just one run on five hits and three walks over seven innings of a no-decision as the Athletics went on to lose, 4-1, to the Angels.
"That was quite an outing for his (Outman) first time out. He threw the ball well. Unfortunately we couldn't get him any runs," Geren said.
Hideki Matsui had the lone RBI for the A's, who saw their longest losing streak of the season extended to six straight games. A loss tonight would give them their longest skid since they dropped the final seven games of the 2009 season.
Reliever Brian Fuentes was charged with his seventh loss of the season after Los Angeles scored three times in the eighth inning to take control. Torii Hunter sparked the key frame with an RBI double.
"I've been feeling good the last couple of games and the results are starting to show. I'm focusing a little more and looking for pitches to drive," said Hunter.
Bobby Abreu knocked in a run and Jeff Mathis plated two more for the Angels, who have won three of four since a five-game losing streak.
Dan Haren hopes to end his string of tough luck when he takes the rubber for the Angels.
Haren is winless in six straight starts since winning four in a row from April 6-17, going 0-2 with a 2.34 ERA. He has allowed more than two earned runs just once over his drought and still owns the league's fourth-best ERA at 1.84.
The 30-year-old righty gave up just one run on three hits and four walks over eight innings at Seattle on Thursday, but did not factor into the decision of a 2-1 loss.
Haren is 2-0 with a 2.67 ERA in four career starts against the Athletics, who he pitched with from 2005-07 and won 43 games with. He got a no-decision when he faced them on April 27 even though he was charged with just a single unearned run over seven frames.
The Athletics had won three straight over Los Angeles since a six-game series losing streak, but have now lost nine of their last 10 at Angel Stadium.
