Bruce's big hit lifts Reds in Philly

May 25, 2011 - 3:46 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jay Bruce hit a two-out, three-run double in the top of the ninth inning, as the Cincinnati Reds snapped a six-game skid and avoided a 10th consecutive road loss to the Philadelphia Phillies with a 6-3 win at Citizens Bank Park.

Brandon Phillips added a two-run single for the Reds, who recorded their first win in the City of Brotherly Love since July 7, 2009. The Phillies had beaten Cincinnati for the eighth straight time in Monday's series opener, postseason included.

Philadelphia threatened in the eighth, but Logan Ondrusek (3-2) retired Domonic Brown on a fielder's choice to escape a jam with runners on first and second.

Ryan Madson (2-1) failed to preserve the tie in the ninth as Cincinnati loaded the bases with two outs. With one out, the Phillies reliever fielded a bunt by Drew Stubbs and his off-balanced throw allowed the speedy center fielder to reach second base. After Phillips lined out to shortstop Jimmy Rollins, Madson intentionally walked Joey Votto and Scott Rolen hit an infield single before Bruce cleared the bases by smashing a 1-1 pitch to right field.

"We got some clutch hits at the end there," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "Big bunt by (Stubbs). (Rolen) got a big hit and none bigger than Jay Bruce's."

Francisco Cordero tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 299th career save.

The Reds scratched out a run in their first at-bat against Philadelphia starter Vance Worley. Taking the place of the injured Joe Blanton, the bespectacled right-hander was recalled from the minors on Monday, and gave up an RBI single to Rolen that followed a two-out double by Votto.

Cincinnati put its first two batters on base in the second but couldn't produce a run.

The Phillies, who had won three of their previous four games, pulled even in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez led off with back-to- back doubles. Ibanez then scored on a Brown sacrifice fly to give Philadelphia the lead.

Carlos Ruiz's RBI double in the fourth put the Phillies up 3-1, but the Reds rallied in the fifth. Worley began the inning by walking his Cincinnati counterpart Johnny Cueto. Stubbs then hit a ground-rule double and scored the tying run on Phillips' looping single near the right-field line.

"I didn't know," Worley said when asked about his role with the Phillies. "Obviously, just go out there and go as deep as I can. I'm just glad to be up here."
