Mets turn to Gee versus Cubs
May 25, 2011 - 2:45 PMVideo
The Cubs sent the Mets to their third straight loss in Tuesday's opener after Ryan Dempster pitched seven strong innings and Chicago capitalized on some shoddy New York fielding in an 11-1 victory.
The Mets have surrendered 27 runs in the three losses.
Gee, a 25-year-old from Cleburne, Texas, arrived in the majors last season following his 21st-round selection by the Mets in the 2007 draft.
He won two decisions across five starts with a stingy 2.18 earned run average and has been equally successful in a starting role this season, winning three times and adding two no-decisions in five starts.
The Mets are 5-0 in games he starts and lost all three games in which he came in from the bullpen.
The 6-foot-1, 204-pounder tossed his best game of the season in his most recent outing, allowing just two hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings in New York's 1-0 defeat of Washington on May 19.
In 34 overall innings, he's allowed 27 hits and 15 runs with 25 strikeouts.
Gee has never faced the Cubs.
On Tuesday, Starlin Castro had three hits and drove in two for Chicago, which also got a pair of RBI from Darwin Barney and Carlos Zambrano.
Dempster (3-4) allowed seven hits and fanned five to move his career mark to 10-5 against the Mets.
Another second-year righty, Florida native Casey Coleman, gets his eighth start of the season for the Cubs.
The product of Florida Gulf Coast University picked up win No. 2 of the season in his last start on May 19 in Miami, downing the Marlins, 5-1, with 5 2/3 innings of scoreless, four-hit ball with seven strikeouts.
It was his first victory since an 8-3 defeat of Colorado on April 16.
Coleman was 4-2 in 12 late-season appearances for the Cubs last season after his 15th-round selection in the 2008 draft.
He has never faced the Mets.
New York won four of seven versus Chicago last year, but dropped two of three at Wrigley Field.
