Giants continue home set with Marlins

May 25, 2011 - 2:46 PM (Sports Network) - San Francisco Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner takes aim at his second victory of the season tonight when his club continues a three-game series with the Florida Marlins at AT&T Park.

After losing his first six decisions of the season, Bumgarner finally beat the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, holding them to a run and six hits in 8 2/3 innings.

"He felt like he got in a pattern," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He got away from using both sides of the plate."

Bumgarner lost his only other start to the Marlins last year, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings.

Florida, meanwhile, will counter with righty Chris Volstad, who is 2-3 with a 5.73 ERA. Volstad absorbed the loss on Thursday to the Chicago Cubs, as he surrendered three runs and four hits in five innings.

"I felt good and didn't fall behind in the count too many times," Volstad said. "Most of their hits were for extra bases. Three of them were leadoff doubles, which puts you in a jam right away."

Volstad is 1-1 in two starts against the Giants, but has allowed only two runs in 15 innings of those outings.

On Tuesday, Ricky Nolasco pitched into the ninth inning and Gaby Sanchez hit a three-run double, leading Florida to a 5-1 victory.

Nolasco (4-0) earned a decision for the first time in four starts, carrying a shutout through 8 1/3 innings before he was lifted with the bases loaded. He was charged with one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out five.

"I would have liked to finish it, but the important thing is we won," Nolasco said. "It's a big win."

Sanchez was 3-for-4 and Mike Stanton hit a solo homer for the Marlins, who have won three of their last four.

Matt Cain (3-3) suffered his first career loss against Florida after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in six innings.

The loss ended the Giants five-game overall winning streak and it was their first setback at AT&T Park since April 24, halting a nine-game tear there.

San Francisco won five of its seven matchups against the Marlins last season.
