Yankees target series win over Jays in the Bronx

May 25, 2011 - 3:29 PM (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees take aim at a series win this afternoon following a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees trailed by one heading into the ninth in the second game of this three-game set, but Mark Teixeira's single off the glove of first baseman Juan Rivera scored Curtis Granderson, capping a four-run rally and lifting New York to a 5-4 win.

"It was great to do that in front of our home crowd," Teixeira said. "We haven't done that too much this year. To come back and get a win, a big win, especially for CC and the home fans was nice for us."

Granderson finished 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Russell Martin hit a solo homer and drove in two for New York, which made a winner out of CC Sabathia (5-3), who picked up his 31st career complete game. The burly left- hander allowed eight hits and four runs, recording 77 of his 103 pitches for strikes. He also retired the final 16 batters.

The Yankees, who scored four times over the final two innings, have now won six of their last eight games.

Rajai Davis went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for Toronto, which has dropped three of five. Starter Ricky Romero yielded one run on seven hits over seven innings. The lefty struck out four and walked three.

But in the end of was Toronto closer Frank Francisco who couldn't hold off the Yankees.

"I didn't try to walk anybody. When I got behind in the count I was still pitching my game," Francisco said. "I didn't give in with my fastball."

Heading to the hill for the Yankees this afternoon will be right-hander Freddy Garcia, who has lost his last two and four of his last five starts. Garcia's latest setback came on Friday against the Mets, as he allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings of his team's 2-1 loss.

Garcia's slump started with a loss to the Blue Jays back on April 29. He is 6-6 lifetime against them with a 6.06 ERA in 15 starts.

The Blue Jays will counter with left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes, who is still searching for his first win of the season. Reyes, though, is coming off a terrific outing his last time out, as he held the Houston Astros scoreless over seven innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 5-2 loss.

"Baseball is a funny game. Stuff is going to happen," Reyes said. "I went out there and put up a quality start and gave the team a chance to win. That's all you can do."

Reyes, who has never faced the Yankees, is 0-3 on the year with a 4.02 ERA and hasn't won a game since June of 2008 when he was pitching for the Braves, going 0-12 with a 6.41 ERA in 30 appearances -- 27 starts -- since. Matt Keough holds the major league record, making 28 consecutive winless starts for Oakland from Sept. 6, 1978-Aug. 8, 1979.

The Yankees have won four of seven versus the Blue Jays this season.
