Lee is back with the Philadelphia Phillies and looks to quiet Cincinnati's lineup again this afternoon in the finale of a four-game series from Citizens Bank Park. In a 1-0 win versus the Reds at Seattle's Safeco Field on June 18, Lee allowed six hits, struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Lee pushed his record against the Reds to 4-2 in eight starts, but has a pedestrian 4.69 earned run average in that time.
The left-hander and 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner with Cleveland was 0-3 with a 3.66 ERA in six starts before shutting down his former Texas teammates in a 2-0 win on Saturday. Lee, who helped Texas to the World Series last year, struck out 10 batters and scattered five hits over eight innings, improving to 3-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 starts this season. He also owns a 2-1 mark in five home starts.
Reds starter Homer Bailey has won his first two home starts this season, but unfortunately is in south Philadelphia for his outing Thursday. Bailey had won his first three trips to the mound before losing, 2-1, at Cleveland in an interleague affair on Saturday.
Bailey was solid through seven innings, allowing both runs and four hits, but suffered his first defeat of 2011. The right-hander has lasted at least six innings in each of his four starts this season, but hasn't enjoyed much success in his career against the Phillies as evidenced by his 0-2 mark in three starts.
Players from both sides certainly did not get enough rest for this afternoon's game after a 19-inning, 5-4 win by the Phillies in Wednesday's third installment of this series. Phillies second baseman Wilson Valdez eventually took the mound in the 19th inning and was the ninth pitcher to be used by Phils manager Charlie Manuel. He recorded the win with a scoreless frame against the meat of Cincinnati's lineup prior to Raul Ibanez plating Jimmy Rollins with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half.
Rollins led off the inning with a single and Domonic Brown walked. Placido Polanco then moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt to the mound. Ryan Howard, who homered in the bottom of the 10th to keep the game alive, drew an intentional walk and Ibanez lifted a fly ball to center to score Rollins for the game-winning run. The game lasted more than six hours and the Phillies were able to post their fifth win in eight tries on this nine-game homestand.
"Tried to put a little pressure on him to throw a strike, and he did. And then he came back, he challenged me with another fastball," said Ibanez, who is hitting .329 with four homers and 12 RBI in May. "But that was my approach, was to stay calm and put the fat part of the bat on the ball."
Ben Francisco homered and Valdez finished with three hits and his first-career win as a pitcher. Valdez reached 90 mph on the hill and became the first position player to earn a win in the majors since Brent Mayne of the Rockies beat Atlanta back on Aug. 22, 2000. Reigning NL Cy Young Award recipient Roy Halladay started for the Phillies and threw seven innings of three-run ball. He allowed 11 hits and struck out six in the no-decision.
Philadelphia will begin a nine-game road trip against the Mets, Nationals and Pirates after Thursday's matinee. It posted its 30th win in less than 50 games for the first time since 2001 (47 games).
The Reds took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th inning on Jay Bruce's leadoff home run off of Antonio Bastardo, but closer Francisco Cordero surrendered the tying run on Howard's blast in the bottom half. Carlos Fisher pitched the final 5 2/3 innings and was saddled with the loss after Ibanez's sacrifice fly ended the marathon contest.
"You put that much effort and time and everybody put everything they have in the game and lose, it's tough," Bruce said after the longest game in club history.
Bruce went 3-for-8 with three RBI and reigning NL MVP Joey Votto drove in the other run for the Reds, who have lost seven of eight games and fell to 1-5 on a 10-game road trip that concludes this weekend in Atlanta. Travis Wood drew the start for Cincinnati and allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over six innings of work.
Philadelphia won five of seven matchups with Cincinnati in the regular season a year ago and swept the Reds in three games during the NLDS.
