Ludwick's clutch hit lifts Padres over Nats
May 29, 2011 - 9:03 PM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jorge Cantu scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning on a ball hit by Ryan Ludwick, giving the Padres another close win, 5-4, over the Nationals. The teams traded 2-1 decisions to open the three-game set and eight of their last nine games have been decided by two runs or less the past two years.
The game was tight throughout on Sunday, and with the score tied, 4-4, Cantu placed a pinch-hit double down the right-field line to get San Diego's rally started in the ninth.
After a groundout, Ian Desmond dove for Ludwick's dribbler up the middle and got a glove on it. The shortstop knocked it down, scrambled to recover it and threw an off-balanced throw home that was too late to nab a sliding Cantu.
