Cards kick off homestand versus Giants

St. Louis won its fifth straight series by handing the Colorado Rockies a 4-3 setback in Sunday's finale of a three-game series at Coors Field. Jon Jay hit a two-run homer and Yadier Molina added an RBI single to set the tone in the first inning for the Cardinals, who won for the 10th time in 13 tries and rebounded from Saturday's embarrassing 15-4 loss to the Rockies.
Colby Rasmus also homered and Kyle Lohse collected the win with six innings of two-run ball and six strikeouts. Lohse is now 7-2 on the season, while Fernando Salas was able to nail down his ninth save in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Salas struck out three batters in that stretch.
"I feel like I'm getting that consistency that I want," Lohse said. "I'm just looking to keep it going."
The Cardinals, who will also host the Chicago Cubs for three games, went 6-3 on a nine-game road trip and will send Kyle McClellan to the mound tonight. McClellan is still searching for his seventh win of the season and was denied in his latest bid last Tuesday in a 3-2 win at San Diego. He allowed two unearned runs and two hits in six innings for the no-decision, remaining at 6-1 in 10 games (9 starts) with a 3.11 ERA.
McClellan has never started against San Francisco, but is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in six relief appearances, spanning 5 1/3 innings. The Cardinals are 9-1 this season when McClellan takes the mound.
St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols has only one home run this month and hasn't gone deep at home since April 23 versus Cincinnati. Pujols went 0-for-4 on Sunday, just one day after leaving Saturday's game with a jammed left shoulder suffered on a fielding play.
San Francisco will begin the final stretch of its seven-game road trip and dropped two of three matchups in Milwaukee over the weekend. It lost for the fifth time in six tries in Sunday's 6-0 setback, as starter Matt Cain was roughed up for five runs and 11 hits in six innings to absorb the loss.
"Matt wasn't real sharp today," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of his starter. "You always want to play well against teams you might see down the road. We came in here playing a really hot team. We're banged up but we're not making excuses."
Freddy Sanchez ended with two of San Francisco's six hits in defeat. Sanchez posted the 1,000th hit of his career as well.
The Giants had won five in a row before going on a losing binge and will hand the ball to starter Madison Bumgarner this afternoon. Bumgarner failed to build on his first win of the season by recording a no-decision in Wednesday's 7-6 loss to the Florida Marlins in which he gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings.
Bumgarner is 1-6 in 10 starts to go along with a 3.79 earned run average, and only 1-4 in six road outings this season. The left-hander won his only appearance against St. Louis last August 20 when he held the Cardinals to a pair of runs in seven innings of 6-3 victory at Busch Stadium.
San Francisco won two of three contests versus St. Louis by the Bay from April 8-10 this season.
