Hosmer, Royals get past Angels

Jun 1, 2011 - 3:46 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Eric Hosmer and Jeff Francoeur each drove in two runs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 7-3, to even up a three-game set.

Chris Getz went 3-for-4 for the Royals, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Kansas City's Jeff Francis (2-5) was solid in seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks.

"He battled," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Francis. "He made some pitches to get out of some jams. We scored early and had a couple opportunities for more and he managed to pitch out of some trouble. Yeah, it could have definitely given the game a different complexion if we had gotten more across than just the two (runs) early."

Mark Trumbo had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Angels, who had a two-game win streak snapped. Joel Pineiro (2-2) recorded the loss in a six-inning start surrendering six runs -- four earned -- on nine hits.

The Angels got two runs in the first which was started by Erick Aybar's leadoff double. Maicer Izturis singled to put runners on the corners. Following a Torii Hunter strikeout, Alberto Callaspo singled in Aybar and Trumbo knocked in Izturis.

The Royals, however, countered with a five-run third and never looked back.

With runners on the corners, Alex Gordon and Melky Cabrera had back-to-back RBI singles, which led to Hosmer's drive to left field that plated both Gordon and Cabrera. Following a Francoeur fly out, Hosmer touched home thanks to a Billy Butler soft line drive to left.

"When we scored those runs, it was like a shot in the arm," Francis said. "It was a wake up call. I'm not sure I know exactly what I changed. I just tried to work a little quicker."

Kansas City tacked on a run in fifth thanks to Francoeur's RBI single that plated Hosmer, but the Angels responded in the sixth with a run off of Jeff Mathis' double.

Francoeur's sac fly plated Gordon in the seventh to make up the final score.

Game Notes

LA was 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base...Hosmer also scored twice and finished 2-for-4 while Gordon went 3- for-4 at the plate.
