Collmenter, Diamondbacks blank Nationals
Jun 4, 2011 - 5:53 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Josh Collmenter tossed seven scoreless innings and was backed by Chris Young's solo homer and Stephen Drew's three-run triple. as the Arizona Diamondbacks upended the Washington Nationals, 4-0.Collmenter (4-1), in the fifth start of his rookie campaign, allowed only three hits and one walk while fanning five to lower his ERA from 1.49 to 1.25.
"He's got quality pitches. His changeup is outstanding," Washington manager Jim Riggleman said of Collmenter.
The Nationals took the opener of this four-game series, 6-1, and were looking for their fourth straight win, but Yunesky Maya (0-1) yielded four runs on six hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings in defeat.
Young cranked his 10th home run of the season down the left-field line in the second inning, and Arizona tacked on three more runs in the fifth.
Maya was pulled with the bases full and one out in the frame, and Doug Slaten fell behind 3-0 to Drew before serving up a juicy fastball that was lined off the center-field wall. All three runners -- Collmenter, Ryan Roberts and Justin Upton -- easily scored.
"When I got the 3-0 OK, I just told myself to get a good pitch," Drew said. "I did and just put a good swing on it."
Only one Nationals runner reached second base against the reliever-turned- starter, and Ivan Rodriguez's leadoff double in the third was erased when Collmenter set down the next three hitters.
David Hernandez relieved Collmenter in the eighth and hurled a 1-2-3 frame, and Joe Paterson did the same in the ninth to complete the shutout.
Game Notes
Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth was held out of the lineup because of a stiff elbow...Roberts was the only player on either side with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a double...Collmenter, who made seven appearances out of the bullpen to start his big-league career, threw 67 of his 103 pitches for strikes...This was Arizona's fourth shutout of the season...Washington has been blanked eight times this year.
