Holland, Rangers shut down struggling Tribe

Jun 5, 2011 - 3:27 AM Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Derek Holland went the distance to lead the Texas Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.

Holland (5-1) gave up only five hits while walking one and fanning five as the Rangers won their fourth straight game -- including the first three in this four-game series.

"He did good," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Holland. "He was able to maintain his changeup throughout the game and keep his fastball in the strike zone. He was able to do what we wanted him to do."

Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz provided the all the offense for Texas as both hit two-run home runs. Yorvit Torrealba added two hits for the victors.

Asdrubal Cabrera belted his 15th double of the season, while Michael Brantley and Grady Sizemore added hits for Cleveland in a losing effort.

Fausto Carmona (3-7) went 6 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits to pick up the loss for the Indians, who saw their losing streak expand to three games.

Texas struck first and took the lead for good in its first at-bat. After Elvis Andrus slapped a single to right, Hamilton followed by blasting a Carmona offering into the second deck in right field to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Cleveland threatened in the second when Carlos Santana hit a leadoff single and Grady Sizemore followed with a base hit to put runners on first and second with no outs. Holland battled back to get Shelley Duncan to line into a double play and Austin Kearns lined out to end the threat.

The Indians loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth on a single by Brantley, a walk to Adam Everett and an Adrian Beltre error on a Cabrera grounder. Holland remained composed and induced a groundout from Santana to end the inning.

"We didn't do much offensively," Cleveland manger Manny Acta said. "We're struggling at the plate right now."

The Rangers extended their lead with two runs in the seventh. After a Beltre walk, Cruz came up and belted a fastball from Carmona into the left field seats to give Texas a 4-0 lead.

Holland then stranded two runners in the home seventh, worked around Cabrera's two-out double in the eighth, then retired the side in order to cap his shutout.

Game Notes

Holland's only other shutout of his career came on August 9th, 2009 in a 7-0 win over the LA Angels...Indians third baseman Jack Hannahan missed his second consecutive game with quad soreness...Entering play on Saturday, Texas' starting rotation has 25 wins this season, tying them with Philadelphia for most in the majors...Cruz extend his hitting streak to eight games...Ian Kinsler went 0-for-4 and is now hitless in his last 15 at- bats...Cleveland went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, Texas went 0-for-4.
