Mets shutout Braves behind Gee's strong outing

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Dillon Gee threw seven innings and Jose Reyes hit a three-run triple to help the New York Mets take a 5-0 win over the Atlanta Braves in the second of a three-game set.

Gee (6-0) gave up just four hits and two walks with two strikeouts while Justin Turner and Jason Pridie each drove in a run for the Mets, who came into the game having dropped three of four.

"I think the confidence factor is pretty high right now, just knowing that the guys keep picking me up each time I go out there," said Gee. "You have to give credit to the guys that play defense behind me."

Dan Uggla hit a double while Jair Jurrjens (7-2) got the loss as he was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on six hits with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings for the Braves, who had won their previous two coming into the game.

It was a scoreless game until the seventh inning when the Mets took control of the game. After Angel Pagan grounded out, Jason Bay hit a grounder to short that Alex Gonzalez misplayed. Josh Thole then doubled and Ruben Tejada was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jason Pridie then gave the Mets the lead with a pinch-hit single to right.

"You can't get mad at Gonzo because he's saved our butts in a lot of games," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said about Alex Gonzalez's error. "It happens and they capitalized on it."

That chased Jurrjens from the game and in stepped Scott Proctor, who promptly served a pitch to Reyes that the shortstop drilled to the right field corner for a triple. Justin Turner followed with a sac fly for a 5-0 lead.

Pedro Beato pitched a perfect eighth and got the first out of the ninth while Tim Byrdak retired the final two batters to complete the shutout for the Mets.

The Braves stranded a runner on third base in the third and wasted a leadoff double from Uggla to begin the fifth.

Thole led off the home fifth with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, but the next three batters were retired to end the frame.

Game Notes

Gee is the first Mets rookie to ever win his first six decisions as a starter. Jon Matlock began his 1972 rookie season 6-0, but five of those were as a starter and one in relief. Matlock won the rookie of the year award that year...Atlanta has won three of the five matchups with New York this season...Jurrjens gave up more than two earned runs in a start for the first time this season...Atlanta said on Saturday that center fielder Jordan Schafer did not break his nose after fouling a pitch into his face on Friday. He has a small non-displaced fracture of the right maxillary sinus and is listed as day-to-day.
