Last place teams face off in Baltimore
Jun 6, 2011 - 2:29 PMVideo
Oakland enters the week having lost six straight games to fall to 27-33 overall and last in the four-team AL West, seven games behind the first-place Texas Rangers. Baltimore, meanwhile, is last in the five-team AL East, seven games in back of the front-running New York Yankees and 26-31 overall.
The Athletics have won just 13 of 31 games away from home and are coming off a 6-3 loss at Boston on Sunday that capped off a three-game sweep.
Brett Anderson (3-6) took the loss after allowing five runs in five innings. The left-hander has given up 15 runs in his last two starts.
Baltimore stumbled at home on Sunday, as Adam Lind went 4-for-4 with a pair of solo homers and three RBI in Toronto's 7-4 win. Mark Reynolds hit a solo homer for the Orioles, who have lost seven of their last nine.
Jeremy Guthrie (2-8) allowed six runs on nine hits over five full frames to suffer the loss. He also walked three and struck out three.
Lefty Gio Gonzalez gets the call on the mound for Oakland and will face the Orioles for the second time in three starts. He pitched five innings against them on May 27 in California and go a no- decision in a game the Athletics ultimately won, 6-2.
In three career starts, Gonzalez has allowed 18 hits and four earned runs across 17 1/3 innings against the Orioles, striking out 18 batters while posting a 2.08 earned run average.
In his most recent start on June 1 in Oakland, the 25-year-old Floridian was touched for five hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings while dropping a 4-2 decision to the Yankees.
For Baltimore, lefty Brian Matusz makes his second start of the season after beginning the year on the disabled list with a strained left intercostal muscle. He returned to the majors on Wednesday and was terrific, as he allowed one run on four hits in a no-decision at Seattle - a game Baltimore won, 2-1.
Matusz, who won 10 games last season in 32 starts, has three career meetings with Oakland and is 1-2 with a 6.11 ERA, having allowing 23 hits and 12 runs in 17 2/3 innings.
Oakland swept a three-game set from the O's earlier in the year and is 20-4 in the series since the start of the 2008 campaign.
