Red Sox, Beckett aim for second straight sweep in the Bronx

Beckett seeks his third victory in as many starts versus the Yankees this season when the Red Sox try for their second straight sweep of the franchise in the Bronx.
Boston has won seven of eight against New York this season, including all five meetings so far at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox swept a three-game set there on May 13-15 to run their winning streak in this series to four straight before taking the first two meetings of this set.
The right-handed Beckett has picked up a victory in both series versus the Yankees this season, besting them at home on April 10 before leading the Red Sox to a victory in the Bronx on May 14. He has thrown a combined 14 shutout innings over those two starts, striking out 19 while allowing just six hits and improving to 12-7 with a 5.66 earned run average in his career versus the Yanks.
Beckett is coming off a no-decision versus the A's on Saturday as he allowed more than two earned runs for the first time in seven starts. The 31-year-old was charged with three runs on four hits and three walks over six innings and is 4-2 with a 2.01 ERA in 12 starts this year. He hasn't allowed a home run in seven straight starts, the second-longest streak of his career behind only an eight-start run from Aug. 22, 2002-April 5, 2003.
New York's CC Sabathia will counter Beckett for the third time this season and has picked up a pair of losses over the first two encounters. Sabathia struggled in the last meeting in May, allowing six runs over 6 2/3 innings to fall to 6-7 with a 3.63 ERA in his career versus Boston.
The 30-year-old southpaw does bring a four-start winning streak into this outing, going at least eight innings in each game of his current run. Sabathia hurled 8 2/3 innings versus the Angels on Saturday, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on eight hits in a 3-2 triumph.
"I felt pretty good. My [changeup] is what kept me in the game. They did help me out a lot by swinging early," Sabathia said after improving to 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 13 starts this season.
Sabathia will try to slow down the Red Sox tonight after they posted an 11-6 victory on Wednesday to move a game ahead of the Yankees for first place in the American League East. David Ortiz belted a two-run homer for a second straight night, going deep in the first inning, while J.D. Drew also homered and finished with three runs batted in.
"There's a lot of games left. We're just going to try to keep playing good ball and see what happens," said Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who is scheduled to have his knee examined on Thursday.
Knuckleball specialist Tim Wakefield earned the win despite allowing five hits and as many runs over 5 1/3 innings for the Red Sox, who have won five straight and 18 of their past 24 overall.
A.J. Burnett was pounded for seven runs over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss for the Yankees, their second in a row to open a 10-game homestand.
"When you miss a little bit in this league you're going to get hit hard," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "That's the bottom line. Sometimes you're going to get away with it. But a lot of times when you face a lineup like this, you're going to get hit. That's what happened in the first inning."
Francisco Cervelli, replacing an injured Russell Martin (back), went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Derek Jeter moved to within 11 hits over 3,000 with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
The Yankees, who have lost 10 of their last 13 at home to the Red Sox, have now lost their first five home games to Boston to start a season for the first time since 1913 when they played at the Polo Grounds.
