Young's homer helps D-Backs salvage series in Pittsburgh

Jun 10, 2011 - 2:28 AM Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Chris Young hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-0 victory over Pittsburgh in the finale of a three-game set at PNC Park.

Young finished with two hits, while Justin Upton and Miguel Montero each went 2-for-4 with a double for Arizona, which salvaged a win in the series and snapped a three-game slide.

Josh Collmenter got the starting nod for the Diamondbacks and worked five-plus innings. The righty yielded four hits, walked a pair and struck out four. Micah Owings (2-0) picked up the win for tossing 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and added a single and scored a run.

Andrew McCutchen went 1-for-3 with a walk for the Pirates, who had won four of five coming into the contest. Starter Jeff Karstens scattered four hits and one walk while striking out two over seven innings, but did not factor in the decision.

With the game scoreless after seven innings, Arizona put up two runs in the eighth off Chris Resop (2-2). Owings reached with a one-out infield single and Young followed by cracking a 2-0 fastball just inside the left-field foul pole.

The Pirates stranded a runner on base in the home portion and David Hernandez entered for the bottom of the ninth, and retired the side to secure the win and record his second save of the season.

Each team stranded a runner in scoring position in the first and pitching dictated things over the next several innings.

After Karstens allowed a leadoff single to Young in the third, the veteran right-hander settled down to retire the next 13 batters in a row before Montero broke the string with a single in the seventh.

Pittsburgh threatened in the home seventh, but was unable to push a run across. Josh Harrison got things started with a single and moved to second on a bunt. Pinch-hitter Garrett Jones walked before Owings struck out Jose Tabata and Xavier Paul grounded into a force out.

Game Notes

Earlier on Thursday, Pittsburgh placed catcher Chris Snyder on the 15-day disabled list with lower back pain and selected the contract of catcher Wyatt Toregas from Triple-A Indianapolis...The Pirates took four of six matchups between the teams a year ago, including a three-game sweep in the Steel City from September 17-19...Pittsburgh stranded nine runners on base, while Arizona left seven.
