Nats, Pads continue set at Petco

Jun 10, 2011 - 2:41 PM (Sports Network) - It didn't take long for prospect Anthony Rizzo to have an impact in San Diego's lineup.

With some youthful energy at the plate and a resurgent Mat Latos on the mound, the Padres go for their fourth straight victory over the Washington Nationals tonight in the continuation of a four-game series at Petco Park.

One of four players acquired from Boston in the Adrian Gonzalez deal this past offseason, Rizzo was recalled from the minors prior to last night's game after hitting .365 with 16 homers and 63 RBI with Triple-A Tucson and went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks while starting at first base.

Rizzo tripled to begin the fifth inning and scored his first run three batters later on Chris Denorfia's single.

"It was awesome. It was a dream come true," Rizzo said.

Chase Headley hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Aaron Harang hurled six innings of two-run ball for the Padres, who have won five of their past seven games.

San Diego has also won three straight over the Nationals, taking two of three at Washington on May 27-29, and is 10-2 over its last 12 games at home in this series.

The Padres will try to continue that success tonight behind Latos, who has won four of five decisions since starting the season 0-5 with a 4.86 earned run average in six starts.

The right-hander won his third straight outing on Sunday, giving up two runs on six hits over five innings versus Houston. Latos has pitched to a 2.37 ERA over his win streak and is 4-6 with a 3.94 ERA in 11 starts this season.

Latos, 23, has never lost when facing the Nationals, going 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in three starts.

Appealing a five-game suspension, Jason Marquis will make the start tonight for the Nationals. The veteran received his ban for hitting Arizona's Justin Upton in the back with a pitch in his last start on Sunday, earning an ejection along with manager Jim Riggleman.

"I felt like I was throwing the ball real well. Unfortunately, there was a warning issued early in the game and the umpire made a call," Marquis said.

The right-hander had thrown 5 1/3 scoreless innings prior to being tossed, working around three hits and three walks in a no-decision. He is 6-2 with a 3.84 ERA in 12 starts this season.

The 32-year-old Marquis has faced the Padres 13 times in his career, all but one of those starts, and is 6-5 with a 3.93 ERA.

Marquis will try to prevent Washington from dropping a third straight game tonight. Mike Morse had two hits and an RBI in last night's loss, while Wilson Ramos hit a pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning. Jayson Werth returned to the lineup from a right ankle injury and went 1-for-3 with a run scored, but starter Livan Hernandez was charged with six runs over 5 1/3 innings.

"It was not a good game," Riggleman said. "The effort and intensity were there but we had a couple of things happen."
