Mariners send Bedard to hill against Tigers

Bedard, who missed all of last season due to shoulder surgery, opened the year by losing his first four starts. However, the once-promising left-hander has been terrific since then, going 3-0 and allowing more than two runs just one time in his last seven starts to cut his earned run average in half to 3.46.
He didn't get a decision on Sunday against Tampa Bay, but pitched well, giving up three runs and eight hits in seven innings. He also struck out seven without walking a batter in his team's 9-6 triumph.
Bedard's first win of the year came against the Tigers, as he yielded a run and five hits in seven innings. He is 2-3 lifetime against them with a 4.28 ERA in six starts.
Detroit will counter with a veteran of its own in right-hander Brad Penny, who is 5-4 with a 4.76 ERA. Penny won for the fourth time in his last five decisions on Sunday in Chicago, as he allowed three runs and eight hits in five innings.
Penny lost to Seattle on April 28 and is 0-2 in three starts against them with a 5.21 ERA.
Detroit drew first blood in this series on Thursday, as Alex Avila had a pair of triples and drove in a run to back Justin Verlander's eight strong innings in the Tigers' 4-1 win.
Verlander (7-3) racked up 10 strikeouts and allowed just five hits and one run to get Detroit back on track after a 7-3 loss to Texas on Wednesday following a four-game winning streak. Verlander hasn't lost since April 27 and has gone 5-0 with a no-hitter during that span.
"It seems like we're on a heck of a roll," Verlander said. "I think we're playing the way we should. We have an outstanding ball club with tons of talent. When we get rolling it's tough to beat us."
Brennan Boesch had a two-run shot for Detroit, which has pulled a game behind the idle AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians.
Greg Halman scored the lone run for the Mariners, who have lost four of their last six. Starting pitcher Doug Fister (3-7) tossed a complete game in the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits.
"He did a great job coming back and keeping us in the ball game," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of Fister.
Seattle swept the Tigers earlier in the year at Comerica Park.
