Greinke stays hot, Brewers down Cardinals

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Corey Hart capped off a four-run sixth inning with a two-run double, as the Milwaukee Brewers took down the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-3, in the second test of a three-game series.

Rickie Weeks hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Brewers, who won 8-0 in the series opener on Friday. Prince Fielder added a solo homer.

Zack Greinke (6-1) gave up three runs on seven hits over seven innings to pick up the win. He also struck out nine and walked zero. Since losing his Brewers debut on May 4 at Atlanta, allowing five runs -- four earned -- in four innings of an 8-0 loss, Greinke is 6-0 in seven starts -- all Milwaukee wins.

"We played a great game tonight," Greinke said. "There was a lot of energy in the field and a lot of nice plays behind me."

Lance Berkman hit a solo homer for the Cardinals, who have lost three of four since a four-game winning streak. Daniel Descalso and Yadier Molina had an RBI apiece.

Chris Carpenter (1-6) allowed five runs on five hits over six full frames to suffer the loss.

Fielder put the Brewers ahead 1-0 with a solo homer to center in the second inning.

St. Louis tied the game in the fourth, when Colby Rasmus hit a two-out single and scored on Molina's double to left.

Carpenter and Greinke combined to retire the next 12 batters in order. Berkman stopped the streak with a solo homer to left-center field with two outs in the sixth.

Milwaukee promptly responded with four runs in the home sixth to take the lead. Greinke led off with a single and crossed the plate on Weeks' homer to right. Fielder and Casey McGehee worked two-out walks, and Hart brought home both runners with a double to right-center field. Craig Counsell flied out to end the inning, but not before the Brewers took a 5-2 lead.

"He made two mistakes in that inning. He got a ball up to Weeks and a ball up to Hart and it was four runs," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said of Carpenter.

The Cardinals got a run back in the seventh. Skip Schumaker hit a one-out double and scored on Descalso's double down the left-field line to make it 5-3.

Kameron Loe tossed a scoreless eighth and John Axford pitched a perfect ninth to record his 17th save of the season.

Game Notes

St. Louis took two of three meetings from Milwaukee in early May, but the Brewers have won 10 of the previous 15 matchups in this series...Carpenter fell to 4-5 lifetime against the Brewers...Greinke is unbeaten in five starts at home (4-0). He improved to 4-2 in his career versus St. Louis... The Brewers are 24-9 at home this season...Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols extended his hitting streak to nine games...The Cardinals were without outfielder Allen Craig (bruised/lacerated right knee).
