Weaver, Angels resume set with Mariners at Safeco Field

Jun 14, 2011 - 2:42 PM (Sports Network) - Jered Weaver hopes for a little run support this evening when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continue a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Weaver did not get a decision on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, as he allowed three runs and six hits, while striking out five in 7 2/3 innings. The Angels, though, failed to score while the righty was on the mound.

"All you can do is go out there and do what you can do and keep your team in the game, and I did that for the most part," said Weaver, who is 7-4 on the year with a 2.24 ERA.

Los Angeles' bats have been particularly stingy lately to Weaver on the road, where he is 0-3 with a 3.33 ERA in his last four starts. However, the Angels have produced just three runs for him in those outings.

One of those appearances was in Seattle, as Weaver absorbed the loss in a 3-0 shutout, allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings. He is 10-4 lifetime, however, against the Mariners with a 3.70 ERA in 19 starts.

Los Angeles drew first blood in this series on Monday, as Vernon Wells broke out with two home runs and three RBI, sending the Angels to a 6-3 win.

Wells came in hitting .189 and had not homered since May 7, but his two-run blast in the seventh provided the difference for Los Angeles, which won for only the third time in its last 12 tries.

"I've heard my share [of boos]," Wells said. "That's the way society is now. You see what [Miami Heat's] LeBron James is going though for a simple game of basketball. We have to live with it as athletes. [But] it drives you. It makes you want to get better."

Bobby Abreu and Howie Kendrick each had two hits and an RBI, while Dan Haren (6-4) earned the victory after giving up three runs on seven hits over six frames.

Jason Vargas (4-4) was on the opposite end of the decision as he was charged with five runs on six hits in his seven-inning start.

"We missed some opportunities offensively that really could have changed the course of the game. We just fell short on multiple fronts today," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said.

Hoping to stop the bleeding tonight for the M's will be right-hander Doug Fister, who has lost four of his last five decisions and is 3-7 on the year with a 3.40 ERA. Fister was defeated in Detroit on Thursday, as he allowed four runs and seven hits in eight innings.

Fister is 1-1 in four starts versus the Angels with a 3.54 ERA.

After losing 15 of their 19 matchups to the Angels last season, the Mariners have won two of three in the series this season.
