Hudson goes the distance against former team
Jun 18, 2011 - 5:32 AMVideo
Hudson pitched the first complete game of his career to help the Diamondbacks beat the Chicago White Sox, 4-1, in the opener of a three-game interleague series from Chase Field.
Hudson (8-5) gave up one run on three hits for Arizona, which has won two in a row since a two-game skid. He also struck out five and walked one. Hudson also did some damage with his bat, driving in a run and scoring once.
"It was very exciting," Hudson said. "Obviously it was a little bit special, but I didn't have any different mentality going out there then I had for the whole year."
It was an interesting pitching matchup, as Edwin Jackson toed the rubber for Chicago. Jackson and Hudson were traded for each other in a three-player deal last summer.
Jackson (4-6) allowed four runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 frames for the White Sox, who have lost three straight. He also struck out eight without issuing a walk. Jackson was also facing his former team for the first time since the trade.
"They got some runners in scoring position early in the game and they capitalized on it in the first inning and the seventh," Jackson said. "Just one of those games you try to go and battle and keep your team as close as you can."
Arizona gave Hudson some early support with two runs in the first inning. Stephen Drew hit a one-out single, moved to second on a balk and crossed the plate on Justin Upton's base hit up the middle. Two batters later, Miguel Montero hit an RBI double to right-center field.
Hudson settled in after stranding men on first and second in the first. The right-hander retired 16 straight batters before Alexei Ramirez reached base on Drew's throwing error with two outs in the sixth. Carlos Quentin struck out looking to end the frame.
Chicago's second hit of the game didn't come until the seventh, when Paul Konerko led off the inning with a homer to left-center field.
The D-Backs responded with two runs in the home seventh to take a 4-1 lead. With a runner on first and two outs, Hudson helped his own cause with an RBI double off the base of the wall in right-center field. Chris Sale took over for Jackson on the mound, but had the same luck. Kelly Johnson doubled to left to plate another run.
The White Sox failed to advance a runner past first the rest of the way.
Game Notes
Chicago and Arizona haven't squared off since the 2005 campaign, when the D'Backs won two of three meetings at U.S. Cellular Field. The Diamondbacks also won a three-game series in 2003 in the desert...Hudson is 5-0 over his last seven starts...D-Backs outfielder Gerardo Parra had an eight-game hitting streak come to an end, while Montero extended his hitting streak to eight games.
