Hernandez has fanned 103 batters so far this season and owns a 7-5 mark with a 3.30 earned run average over his first 15 starts. He has won three of his past four decisions and defeated Detroit the last time out on Sunday with eight innings of three-run ball and six K's in a 7-3 victory in Motown. He rebounded from a rough start on June 7 against the White Sox, who reached the reigning AL Cy Young Award honoree for five runs in 6 2/3 frames.
The right-hander hopes to stay strong at home in his first career appearance against the Phillies, and is 3-1 in six trips to the Seattle mound.
Seattle got the job done with a 4-2 victory in Friday's series opener, as rookie Michael Pineda pitched six innings of one-run ball with five K's to improve to 7-4 on the season. He had a no-hit bid broken up in the sixth inning and was able to handle Philly's potent offense.
"I was making my pitches tonight," Pineda said on the club's site. "I want to throw quality pitches on the mound."
Brandon League pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his American League-leading 20th save. Mariners second baseman Dustin Ackley made his anticipated MLB debut and stroked a single up the middle in the second inning for his first major league hit, finishing 1-for-4 on the night.
"I got the call in Fresno the other day and just to hear the manager tell you that you're going up is a real special thing," Ackley said. "I don't think it's really sunk in yet, but I'm sure it will shortly."
Ichiro Suzuki had three hits and scored three times, while Miguel Olivo homered for Seattle, which has won two straight and five of nine games. The Mariners are just a half-game behind the Texas Rangers for the lead in the American League West Division. Ichiro has recorded six straight multi-hit games and owns 29 on the season. His career high is seven straight multi-hit games last done from May 8-15, 2010.
Carlos Peguero went 0-for-4 last night and entered the game batting .314 with 10 runs, three homers and seven RBI in his last 10 contests.
Philadelphia had a season-best seven-game winning streak cut short with Roy Oswalt on the mound last night. Oswalt went 6 1/3 innings for the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks.
"He pitched well," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of Oswalt. "He has to keep Ichiro off base. You've got to keep him off base and we didn't do that tonight. Outside that I feel like he did fine. He kept us in the game, but just had some trouble against Ichiro and Ryan."
Shane Victorino and Chase Utley each drove in a run for the Phillies, who are still 10-3 in their previous 13 games and five games ahead of Atlanta for the top spot in the National League East standings. The Phillies will also visit St. Louis for three games after their trek through the Emerald City.
The Phillies, who own a 10-6 mark this month, are 16-15 on the road as opposed to their 28-12 ledger at Citizens Bank Park. They outscored their opponents, 43-15, during the recent seven-game winning streak before last night's loss. Raul Ibanez was back in Seattle for the first time since signing with the Phils after the 2008 campaign.
Vance Worley will make a spot-start for the Phillies on Saturday after he was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The club made room for the young pitching prospect when reliever J.C. Romero was designated for assignment and will get a chance to see if Worley has the skills to remain with the big league club. Worley said working out the kinks with the IronPigs was beneficial to his call up.
"It was better for me to do it down there than up here," Worley said on the Phillies' website. "I think I would've been more stressed out if I would've had a rough outing like that again."
Worley, a right-hander, is 2-1 in six games (4 starts) with the Phillies this season and last pitched in the majors during a 9-5 loss to the New York Mets on May 29 at Citi Field. He was banged around for eight runs -- five earned -- and 12 hits over just three innings. Worley has never faced the Mariners before and was 4-2 with a 2.62 ERA in eight starts at Lehigh Valley.
The Phillies and Mariners are meeting for the first time since Seattle won two of three meetings back in 2005 in the Pacific Northwest. Philadelphia is 108-131 all-time in interleague play, while the Mariners own a solid 140-112 mark against the National League.
