Braves host Jays in opener from Turner Field

Jun 20, 2011 - 3:25 PM (Sports Network) - The recently-slumping Atlanta Braves can build a small win streak tonight, when they host the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three- game interleague series at Turner Field.

Atlanta had dropped five of six games and two in a row heading into Sunday, when Jason Heyward drove in a pair of runs and Freddie Freeman finished 3- for-4 to help the Braves avoid a three-game sweep with a 4-2 win over the Texas Rangers.

Freeman also knocked in a run, while speedy leadoff man Jordan Schafer scored twice for the Braves, who have not been swept in a series of at least three games this season.

Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens (9-3) collected his ninth win after throwing 5 1/3 innings. He allowed just one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

On Sunday in Cincinnati, Miguel Cairo blasted a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Reds over the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-1.

Carlos Villanueva (4-1) worked seven innings in defeat, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out three.

Aaron Hill smacked a home run for Toronto, which had won four of its previous five games.

Veteran right-hander Tim Hudson takes the mound for Atlanta for his 16th career start against the Blue Jays.

He's 10-3 with a 3.00 earned run average in 105 previous innings in the matchup, allowing 88 hits and 39 runs with 67 strikeouts.

He lasted just four innings in his most recent start on June 15, giving up four hits and three runs in a 4-0 loss to the New York Mets.

His last win was a start earlier on June 10 in Houston, where he scattered seven hits and gave up two runs in six innings of an 111-4 triumph.

For Toronto, lefty Ricky Romero comes back from a career-best 12-strikeout effort in his last start.

On June 15 against Baltimore, Romero allowed three hits and a run in eight innings of a 4-1 defeat of the Orioles.

It ended a two-start skid in which he had lost to Baltimore and Kansas City and fell to 5-6 on the season.

He has never faced the Braves.

Atlanta swept a three-game series from Toronto at Turner Field the last time these clubs met from May 22-24, 2009.
