Kershaw, Dodgers shut down Tigers

Jun 21, 2011 - 5:24 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Juan Uribe's solo home run in the first was all Clayton Kershaw would need en route to his second shutout of the season, as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Detroit Tigers, 4-0, in the opener of a three-game series.

Kershaw (7-3) allowed just two hits and equaled a season-high 11 strikeouts for the Dodgers, who have won two in a row since a five-game skid. The starter also drove in a pair of runs while Dioner Navarro knocked in another for the victors.

"I felt good," Kershaw said. "(Navarro) and I were on the same page tonight. I threw a lot of changeups and worked out. It was fun tonight."

Casper Wells and Ryan Raburn had the only two hits for the Tigers, who have started a six-game interleague road trip with a 1-3 mark.

Tigers starter Brad Penny (5-6) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings against his former team.

Uribe's solo home run in the first held up for five more innings until the sixth when Navarro brought in a run with a rocket down the first base line.

James Loney started off the inning with a double, and after Marcus Thames' flyout, Navarro's double brought home Loney for a 2-0 lead.

With the bases loaded in the eighth, Kershaw helped his own cause with a two- out grounder through the right side that brought in Loney and Navarro to make up the final score.

The starter built off of that momentum and closed out the ninth with three- straight strikeouts that capped off his third career shutout.

"He's as good as I've seen all year against us," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said of Kershaw. "It was absolutely tremendous. He was brilliant."

Game Notes

Kershaw has three RBI this season and is hitting .294. He improved to 5-0 in his last 10 starts...Detroit's Miguel Cabrera has started every game this season, but will not start Tuesday in the second game of the series. The Tigers will face Dodgers starting pitcher Chad Billingsley, who has held Cabrera 0-for-12 in his career. Detroit will combat the Dodgers with nine-game winner Max Scherzer...Los Angeles won two of three meetings with Detroit a year ago at Comerica Park.
