Correia tries to pitch Pirates to series win over O's

Jun 22, 2011 - 2:32 PM (Sports Network) - Early-season standout Kevin Correia again seeks his first win since June 1 today when the Pittsburgh Pirates close out a three-game interleague series with the visiting Baltimore Orioles at PNC Park.

Correia, who'd won 36 times in 231 big-league appearances through 2010, opened 2011 with a flourish and was 8-4 on the season after defeating the New York Mets, 9-3, in the month's first game at Citi Field.

He's winless in three outings since, however, dropping to 8-6 overall while allowing 19 hits and 10 runs in 18 1/3 innings against Arizona, the Mets and Cleveland.

This is his first career start against the Orioles.

Pittsburgh evened the series in Tuesday's second game when Neil Walker went 2- for-4 with three RBI in the Pirates' 9-3 win.

Jose Tabata had a 2-for-5 night with two runs scored and two driven in while Garrett Jones and Xavier Paul each knocked in two runs for the Pirates, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

James McDonald started on the mound, but did not factor in the decision as he lasted just 4 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs on seven hits and walked four. Chris Resop (3-2) got the win for pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Adam Jones hit a two-run home run while J.J. Hardy added a solo blast for the Orioles, who had won their previous two. Jeremy Guthrie (2-9) dropped his third straight decision as he was tagged for six runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Baltimore ends the series with rookie lefty Zach Britton, who'll meet the Pirates for the first time in his 15th big-league outing.

The 23-year-old improved to 6-4 on the season with a 3-2 defeat of Oakland on June 8, allowing four hits and a run across six innings of work.

He's pitched once since and got a no-decision after allowing an earned run on five hits in five innings of Baltimore's 8-4 loss in Washington.

The Orioles are 8-6 in games he's pitched.

Baltimore and Pittsburgh last met during the 2008 campaign, when the Orioles won a three-game series at Camden Yards. Pittsburgh took two of three meetings in the Steel City in 2005.
