Tomlin, Hudson both eye 10th victory in the desert

Hudson lost his first four starts of the season and has bounced back quite nicely, going 9-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 12 starts since, with Arizona recording a 10-2 mark in that stretch. Hudson is 6-0 in his last eight starts and threw seven innings of three-run ball in a 5-3 win at Kansas City on Thursday. He was coming off a complete-game effort versus the White Sox.
"I felt like I just got in more of a rhythm," Hudson said. "I wouldn't say better location. I still didn't have great command in the last couple of innings, but like I said it was just more of a fact of getting into a rhythm and trying to throw the ball over the plate more."
The right-hander has never faced Cleveland even though he pitched for the Chicago White Sox and owns a 5-2 mark with a 3.16 ERA in eight starts at Chase Field this season. Hudson's nine wins in 2011 are a career-best.
Unfortunately, the Diamondbacks couldn't hold a 3-2 lead in last night's 5-4 loss to the Indians in the series opener and Ian Kennedy didn't have his best stuff on the mound. Kennedy recorded a no-decision and was reached for four runs and eight hits in eight innings. He also struck out eight.
J.J. Putz was dealt the loss for giving up Orlando Cabrera's solo homer in the top of the ninth inning, falling to 1-2 on the year.
"It was a 1-0 breaking ball that I was trying to throw for a strike. It just hung over the middle," said Putz.
Kelly Johnson, Stephen Drew and Justin Upton each knocked in a run for Arizona, which is two games behind San Francisco for the National League West lead and has dropped three in a row since winning four straight.
Cleveland is one game behind Detroit for the AL Central lead and ended a three-game losing streak thanks to Cabrera's blast in the ninth. Asdrubal Cabrera also homered and Lonnie Chisenhall ended with two hits and an RBI in his MLB debut for the Indians, who won for only the second time in seven contests.
"It was kind of a blur," Chisenhall said. "It was nice to go out and get a win."
Mitch Talbot allowed three runs in five innings for the no-decision and Rafael Perez collected the win by getting the final out of the eighth. Chris Perez earned his 19th save with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
The Indians will also visit Cincinnati for three games on this road swing and hope Tomlin can reach double digits in wins for the first time in his career. Tomlin, who was 6-4 in 12 starts a year ago, has won two straight and five of eight starts, including last Wednesday's 4-3 win over Colorado. He limited the damage to three runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Rockies, improving to 9-4 in 15 starts with a 3.95 ERA.
Tomlin, a right-hander, will face Arizona for the first time and is 3-3 in seven starts on the road this season. Cleveland has won six of his last nine trips to the mound.
Arizona and Cleveland are meeting for the first time since the Indians recorded a three-game sweep at home from June 17-19, 2005. Arizona took two of three matchups in this series in both 2002 and 2003.
