Brewers' Marcum seeks win at Yankee Stadium

Jun 29, 2011 - 2:47 PM (Sports Network) - Shaun Marcum tries to continue his impressive first half this evening when the Milwaukee Brewers continue their three-game interleague set against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Marcum should be at full strength this evening after dealing with hip flexor problems his last two times out. Marcum left after just one inning two starts ago, then went just three innings against Tampa Bay last Wednesday and allowed two runs and two hits.

The right-hander has been terrific for the Brewers, going 7-2, while pitching to a 2.95 earned run average. However, the Yankees have given him trouble in his career, as he is just 1-4 lifetime against them with a 6.55 ERA in 11 games, nine of which have been starts.

New York drew first blood in this set on Tuesday, as Nick Swisher's three-run homer highlighted a big second inning and Mark Teixeira -- who went deep for the 24th time this year -- finished with four RBI to help the Yankees to a 12-2 rout.

Freddy Garcia (7-6) scattered eight hits and was charged with a pair of runs over six frames to win his second straight start for the AL East leaders, who have triumphed in seven of their last nine games and are now a season-high 15 games above .500.

Zack Greinke (7-3) was pounded for the second time in three starts. The right- hander allowed five hits and seven runs over two innings for the Brewers, who were coming off a three-game sweep at home against Minnesota.

"I wasn't executing anything, and when I did a couple of times they took some good pitches and then I wasn't able to make another good pitch after that," Greinke said. "I just couldn't pitch any worse than I did. It's no one's fault but mine."

Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun extended his career-high hitting streak to 18 games with a double leading off the eighth inning.

Tonight, New York will hand the ball to righty A.J. Burnett, who has lost three of his last four starts. Burnett was defeated by Colorado on Friday, as he allowed four runs and seven hits with five walks in 6 1/3 frames, dropping him to 7-6 on the year to go along with a 4.15 ERA.

"He struggled with his command tonight," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "He seemed to really find it near the end more than any other point and seemed to get back on track, but he just couldn't really locate his fastball tonight. He was struggling with that."

Burnett has faced Milwaukee five times and is 1-2 with a 6.39 ERA.
